Outlook Express

I have Windows XP and Exporer 7. Two days ago when I tried to open Outlook
Express,I get a message box saying Outlook Express has encountered a problem
and needs to close. I do not know what kind of problem has happened. I had a
live chat with a HP tech, and he told me to uninstall Explorer 7 and reinstall
6.
I do not know if this is my correct and best solution.
Any help out there.

Thanks Bruce for your help. I tried the update from Microsoft, didn't help.
I am going to ask my son-in-law for his advice on which of the two other
methods to try. I do not want to screw this up,so I am going to ask for his
help also.
Thanks again for taking your time to help me,
Barb Kirst

First reboot and try. Second, check your account settings. Third, shut down
any virus detect programs especially scanning programs. In events log are
there any clues?

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
