Mail stuck in Outlook Express "Inbox"

When I try to download new messages in Outlook Express, the message says
"downloading 1 of 7 messages". The messages never download and I can't
download any messages. Outlook Express is therefore not functional. What is
the problem? Thanks.

Do you store email messages in the Inbox or Sent Items?

Outhouse Distress has never really been "functional". Download and
install Thunderbird from www.mozilla.com/thunderbird and it will import
all your messages from OE during installation and use a real email
program with an excellent spam filter and real time spell check.

Does the downloas time-out? Any error messages?

Move all messages out of the Inbox to a local folder you create and then
compact all folders.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Close and open OE and Send/Receive. Working now? If not, the first message
is causing a problem. Log on to your ISPs Webmail site and read and delete
the first message.

I will sometimes keep messages in the Inbox or Sent for a short period of
time.

If you can, use Webmail to read, then delete the first email from the
server. Then restart OE and try again.

This problem isn't limited to OE. I've run into the same thing with
Thunderbird on occasion. The solution offered by others to delete the
offending message using a webmail connection has solved the problem, but
I still wonder why the problem occurs?

I prefer Thunderbird, but OE really isn't that bad...

OE doesn't have a native junk filter or a real time spell check. Also,
the .dbx files have size limitations. I do like the multiple signature
feature in OE but OL has the same thing. I wish T-Bird did.

The problem is you are asking an OE question in a group for XP. Do
you see OE in the group title? NO.

Ask elsewhere

XP *comes* with OE. Ergo, a part of XP and totally on topic, your anal
net nanny problem notwithstanding.

"Ask elsewhere" isn't very helpful.
