Look at the File Types tab on the Folder Options dialog. That list tells
your computer how to handle files according to the filename extension: eg,
scroll down to DOC -- you'll see 'Microsoft Word Document' alongside. That's
how your computer knows, if you click on a .doc filename, to use Word to
open it.

The message you're getting is telling you that the pics attached to your
email have a filename extension that isn't in the list. Click 'New' and fill
in the details.

Your question was fine. Did no one answer? - I'm looking for an answer too!

If no one answered, it was because this question is off-topic for a Word
discussion group since pictures are not Word documents.

Some types of attached pictures (JPEGs, GIFs) will be displayed in the email
itself, if viewing is all that is required. For the rest, if you want to
open them, then you have to have some graphics application (such as photo
editing software) associated with the file type.

If you are not given an option to Open With when you try to open them as
attachments, then save the attachments to your hard drive and view them in
Windows Explorer (My Computer). Right-click and choose Open With. Scroll
down through the list of applications presented and choose an appropriate
one. Check the box for "Always use this program to open these files." That
will establish the file association so that in future you will be able to
open graphics of that type by double-clicking (in Windows Explorer or as an
attachment).

I had the same problem and it did apply to outlook not office as the problem
was display of gif images. Gifs would not display and JPEGs did ok.
Associating the Gif extension did not help. Something else is wrong.
