OUTLOOK EXPRESS PROBLEMS WITH ADDRESS BOOK

G

Guest

Whenever I try to reply to a message I get an error message saying "an error
has occurred". The Address Book seems to be the problem. When I open the
address book I get an error saying the address book is not properly installed.

I've tried importing it. But "import" doesn't import anything.

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling, however all I get is an error
message telling me a newer version is already on the computer and it stops me
from reinstalling. I tried editing the register but even though restarting
the computer pulls up an error message telling me that Outlook Express is not
installed, when I try reinstalling I get the same message saying that a newer
version is installed.

So I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

You would be better off to get a quicker answer from a Outlook Express newsgroup. Follow the below link

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress.

Is MS Outlook (or MS Office) also installed?

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set
to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and
all should be well. (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and
don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

Went to WAB4 and I'm afraid there was no DWORD and nothing named UseOutlook.

Strangely enough I thought I was in that newsgroup. I searched under that
name for the newsgroup and on the browser it presented me with a list of
posts that seem to be on that topic and so when I posted I assumed it would
post in there.

In my news group reader... Outlook Express... it just tells me there's an
error when trying to download from the microsoft newsgroup server.

Post the complete error message.

Is Address Book marked 'Read Only'? In WindowsXP, the OE user files (DBX
and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer,
you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start>Control
Panel>Folder Options>View.

When you click Address Book you get...

The Address Book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly configured,
please re-install.

I searched for all WABs and all DBX and couldn't come up with anything that
looked like a data file. They aren't marked as hidden so I assume that
somehow they've disappeared.

You still haven't answered several of my questions.

Yes, 'Start > Run > wab /Main Identity' should open Main Identity's Address
Book...assuming you have an identity named 'Main Identity'.

'Start > Run > wab /Open' will present you with Address Books you can open
or a window in which you can navigate to a known WAB file.

Here's a workaround:

1. Create a new Named Identity (File > Identities > Add new identity); Do
not rename the Main Identity or call the new identity 'Main Identity';

2. Open OE to the new identity: File > Switch identities;

3a. Open the new identity's Address Book via the Tools dropdown menu (or
CTRL+SHIFT+B);

3b. Import the CSV file via Address Book (not OE) File > Import > Other
address book;

4a. Import your old identity's folders:
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE5;

4b. Configure your Mail and News accounts anew in the new identity;

4c. Delete the old identity: File > Identities > Manage identities.

Keep your new identity safe and as troublefree as possible:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Yes, 'Start > Run > wab /Main Identity' should open Main Identity's Address

So that's what you mean... Right, I did that and it pulled up a message

anything had changed but still the same problem.

Afraid I can't find any .wab files even after creating the "Main Identity"

OK, your original Main Identity is indeed damaged. Try this:

1. In this damaged identity:

Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store folder

Write down the location displayed [e.g., C:\Documents and
Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express, where {GUID} is the Global
Unique IDentifier (technical jargon for a unique long number) used to
specify an Identity].

2. Compact all folders in this identity per
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact.

3. Close OE and leave it closed.

4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to this identity's store folder > Move
*all* DBX files in this folder to another folder you've created for this
purpose.

5a. Start > Run > Regedit > OK

5b. Navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}

where {GUID} is the same as the one you wrote down in Step 1 above.

5c. Right-click on this {GUID} and select DELETE.

6. Delete the folder you found in Step 1 above.

7a. Open OE. If it doesn't open to the new Named Identity you created
earlier, switch to that identity.

7b. File > Import > Messages > Import the DBX files you moved in Step 4
above. See http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE5.

7c. Add your Mail and News accounts in this new identity.

8. Assuming you were able to complete all of Step 7 above in the new Named
Identity, now switch back to the other identity and Delete it (File >
Identities > Manage Identities).

If you weren't able to switch to the new identity in 7a above *and* you can
open Address Book (empty, we'll assume) in the identity to which OE had
opened, import the DBX files into this identity instead.

9a. In the working identity, open Address Book: View > Folders and Groups
(check) > Select Shared Contacts > Assuming all or most of your contacts are
listed, highlight all (CTRL+A) in the right-pane and Drag them into
[Identity Name]'s Contacts folder.

9b. If you find nothing in Shared Contacts, Search in Windows Explorer for
*.wa~ or *.wab~. Open any file found > Help | About will show this file's
location: write it down > Close the file.

9c. Open new Named Identity's Address: File > Import > Address Book > point
the wizard to the file you found in 9b above.

Thanks for trying to solve this.

I'm still stuck though. I followed instructions and got rid of the old
identities and created a new one. However, I still can't open the Address
Book from within OE. I just get this error message: "The Address Book failed
to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly configured. Please re-install."

And of course, it won't reinstall.

WAB files will open the Address Book programme and be read by it. But
despite that, OE refuses to connect with the Address Book.

Also, on creating a new user for the Win XP, I can get Outlook Express to
work properly there. So the only work around I can think of is to somehow get
everything from the other User into the new Win XP user area. Is that a
better option than continuing this? Is there a way of transfering all the
settings of the Old User into the New User area?

OK, your original Main Identity is indeed damaged. Try this:

1. In this damaged identity:

Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store folder

Write down the location displayed [e.g., C:\Documents and
Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express, where {GUID} is the Global
Unique IDentifier (technical jargon for a unique long number) used to
specify an Identity].

2. Compact all folders in this identity per
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact.

3. Close OE and leave it closed.

4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to this identity's store folder > Move
*all* DBX files in this folder to another folder you've created for this
purpose.

5a. Start > Run > Regedit > OK

5b. Navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}

where {GUID} is the same as the one you wrote down in Step 1 above.

If OE and Address Book do indeed work in a new User Profile, one would
suspect corruption in the old, non-functioning one (most likely caused by
hijackware*), so yes, stick with the new one.

OE folders and seettings can be imported/transferred using the information
found in the links posted earlier in this thread.

Sounds like the best way of doing things. One last question, if it isn't
answered in the support FAQs, how do I delete the old User ID from Windows XP
and will that get rid of any hijackware that crept into that area?

You may delete the old one using the User Accounts tool in Control Panel.
(Call it 'User Account', not 'User ID', to avoid confusion with OE
Identities.)

Since OE and Address Book work in the new User Account's OE Identity, we may
assume that the affects of hijackware only exist in the old User Account.
However, to be sure no affects persist in the new one, run the hijackware
tests/checks in it anyway.

Please post any additional WinXP-specific questions only to WinXP General
newsgroup, Lawrence.
