Outlook Express (Compact All Files)

Whenever I try to Compact All Files I receive a error
message:'The folder is being used by Outlook Express or
another application.' I have tried everything to resolve
this problem. On this newsgroup, I have it download/active
in my Outlook Express. I selected 'New Messages Only.'
However, I still see all messages and the new messages only
are bold. How do I correct these two problems? Any help
will be appreciated. Thank you!

Well the 2nd one is easy.
You SHOULD see the old messages even if "new messages only" is selected.
This means only NEW messages will be downloaded.

WoJo: Sorry, but when you compact a folder you should only
see new messages. In fact, you should not even have to
compact folders. When you leave that folder, it should be
cleaned out. Thanks for your input. FYI: My problem is I
ran CrapCleaner and it deleted a bunch of my
data/applications, etc. Deleted CrapCleaner as soon as I
could.

Sorry, I misunderstood your post and was reading it as two different
problems.
I have always had OE set to "New Messages" but have always been able to see
all the messages.

After you have deleted a lot of downloaded messages, which you should
do often, (especially NG's) :

File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar).
File>Folder>Compact all folders.

In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background.
Leave this unchecked. It can cause many problems.

Bruce: Thanks for your help. I do Compact All Folders Very
Often (twice a day at least.) I did Uncheck Compact
messages in background and it made no difference. Still
have the same two concerns.

If you have OE set up to send and receive messages at startup and to check
for new messages at timed intervals, you'll get that folder being used
message when trying to manually compact some or all folders. In the main
window of OE click the Tools menu, click Options, click to remove the
checkmarks to the left of those two options on the General tab, then click
the Apply and OK buttons. You can check your mail manually by clicking the
Send Receive button on the toolbar. Then close Outlook Express, and the
next time you open it, you should be able to compact all folders without the
error message. Also, while you're in Options, click the Maintenance tab,
and make sure that the option for Compact Messages in the Background is NOT
selected. If it is, click to remove the checkmark to the left of that
option. Background message compacting causes problems. As for your
question about New Messages: While in the OE News Reader, click the View
menu, click: Hide Read Messages. Then click the Tools menu, click Options,
click the Read tab, about halfway down you will see the heading: NEWS, click
to put a checkmark to the left of the option: Mark All Messages Read When
Exiting a News Group, then click the APPLY and OK buttons.

2) View, Current View, check Hide Read Messages.
The view has nothing to do with how you download messages.

Have you tried and "uncheck" the tie-in to Windows Messenger when you launch
OE?

In OE:
click Tools / Options / General Tab,
(uncheck) Automatically Log on to Windows Messenger

In the past, when "another app" is using the files in OE message, generally,
it is linked toWindows Messenger.
