OUTLOOK EXPRESS 6 NOT RESPONDING

Hello,
I am working with XP SP2
Suddenly , when opening OE 6, I get the message NOT RESPONDING and then must
click END PROGRAM in a new frame that pops up.
This means that I cannot change any settings in the OE program, such as
under tools, under file, etc, as the screen is completely frozen as soon as
OE appears. It is set to start in INBOX immediately, I see 5 messages
displayed there, and that is it.
Already tried switching off AVG email scanner, no result.
All help is 'enromously' apprediated.
