Outlook 98 Upgrade fails to load on XP

Money's tight and anyway, I've always been completely satisfied with my
Office 97 and the upgrade to Outlook 98 but I just have to get off this
Pentium II (running 98SE).

So I purchased a 3G P4 (Asus) machine for a very low price, loaded my Office
97 onto XP Pro (I've read elsewhere in this forum that this will work fine
and it seems to for all other Office programs) and immediately tried to
Upgrade to Outlook 98.

But, when I attempt to do the upgrade from Outlook 97 to Outlook 98, I get
the following error message:

"Setup has encountered a problem which makes it necessary for you to reboot
your machine before setup can continue. Please reboot your machine and then
rerun setup"

However, rebooting has no effect. I still get the same message each time I
try the upgrade. BTW, the install process progresses quite far, allowing me
to enter the product key, choose the location for the program files, check
for previous versions of Outlook, etc., but when it finally gets down to
installing files, it bombs with the error message shown above.

Any help will be so, so welcomed.

Outlook 98 was usually installed with Active Setup, which means that the
setup would contact a particular server at Microsoft and download the pieces
it needs. That server no longer exists. If you can get your hands on an
older Exchange install kit (Exchange 2002 or earlier, I believe), a full
Outlook 98 install it on that kit.

It was Exchange 5.0 I believe, there is no Exchange 2002.

"Active Setup," "Exchange Install Kit," ???? I don't know what these are or
how to go about "getting my hands on" an Exchange install kit. I'm just a
simple-minded general contractor who happens to own a computer but doesn't
know much about what's inside.

Can you help me out a bit more here?

Thanks.

Ok Brian, I went to Wikipedia and read up on Exchange. Why do you think the
Outlook 98 on Exchange will work for me when my upgrade CD won't? The upgrade
CD works fine on my old machine running W98SE. What's it about XP that makes
the upgrade bomb?

Are you saying that if you run the OL 98 setup right now on an active
Windows 98 system that OL 98 will install, or that the last time you ran it
on a W98 system that it worked?

It's probably not Win XP that's causing the problem. It may be the existing
versions of certain DLL files in Outlook 97.

If my memory still serves me correctly, Microsoft recommended having Office 97
initially updated with SR-1 before installing Outlook 98.

I may be wrong, but it's worth a try.

Both SR-1 and SR-2b for Office 97 are still available for download from
Microsoft.

Brian,

Yes, if I load OL 98 upgrade to OL 97 on an active Windows 98 system (I did
this just last week) it works fine. My problem is that when I load OL 97 on a
Windows XP system and then try the OL 98 upgrade, I get the error message:

"Setup has encountered a problem which makes it necessary for you to reboot
your machine before setup can continue. Please reboot your machine and then
rerun setup"

However, rebooting has no effect; the error message just keeps reappearing.

Alas, I can't help, I'm afraid. The only thing I'd try is to install OL 98
on a clean system without OL 97 on it. Usually upgrade installs validate
that tyou have the prior version either by examining the currently installed
programs or by asking you to insert the prior version CD at some point in
the setup. If you haven't tried that, it's work a shot.

Jim H,
I had issues installing Office97 and Office2000 with a PC that had XP w/SP2
installed, and another PC that came with XP w/SP1, but was upgraded to SP2.
The installation would work on a PC XP w/SP1, that had not been updated to
SP2. A security change in SP2 changes the following registry keys workings:

1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File
Execution Options\htmlmarq.ocx

2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image
File Execution Options\htmlmm.ocx

I had to change the folder name by adding the word "old" to both of these
keys. For the installation of Office97, 2000, MSWorks 98, and MSWorks 2002,
to work.

Changed Key Name to:
1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File
Execution Options\oldhtmlmarq.ocx

2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image
File Execution Options\oldhtmlmm.ocx

Also I have not tried to change back the name of the original key, due to
the fact that I might have to do an update or repair/reinstall on the
program. It hasn't affected anything that I can tell on the PC's in
question.

Right. I meant Exchange V5.5, IIRC.
