Outlook 2007 sorting contacts

I sort my contacts by company, first name, last name via customising the
view. It work's fine apart from any new contacts which appear above the older
contacts and not in alphabetical order. I have tried going to Tools=>Accounts
Settings=>address book and changing the order there but no avail. My contacts
are split into work (with the company name specified) and personal (company
name left blank). My recent additions have all had the Company name blank
and I now have the problem mentioned above. Grateful for any assistance as
I'm tearing my hair out! Thanks.

You'll need to post more accurately and with more detail. For example, when
you say "I sort my contacts by company, first name, last name via
customizing the view" we have to idea to what view you are referring.
Moreover, there is no such option for sorting a view in Outlook. How you
"split" your Contacts is also a complete mystery to us.
Just pretend we aren't there watching you and don't know what you're
thinking. That is very much the case. Post with that reality in mind.

If the company name is blank, the contacts use last name, first name file
as format. How do you expect they should sort if there is no company name?

If the ones with company names are not sorting correctly verify that you
don't have a leading space before the company name.

Thanks for getting back to me Russ. I order my contacts using view=>current
view=>customise current view=>sort, I then sort by company, first name, last
name. The older contacts seems to be sorted ok e.g

{no company} Abi Findlay
{no company} Adam Bidwell
........
{no company} William Tell
{company 'A'} Adam Jones
{company 'A'} Barry George
{company 'B'} Ali Vatt
etc

however my recently added contacts have appeared above the old contacts e.g

{no company} andy jackson - new
{no company} Peter timms - new
{no company} Tim Tom - new
then the older ones as before....
{no company} Abi Findlay
{no company} Adam Bidwell
........
{no company} William Tell
{company 'A'} Adam Jones
{company 'A'} Barry George
{company 'B'} Ali Vatt
etc

Hi Diane - I've provided more detail in my response to Russ. You will see
that for my older contacts the sort criteria seems to work fine. The problem
is my new ones which don't conform - even to your suggested "last name, first
name file
as format. ".

with respect to "If the ones with company names are not sorting correctly
verify that you don't have a leading space before the company name."
.....company names are sorting ok for the older contacts - but not the newer
ones. I've checked the detail in the contact itself and all seems ok. Thanks
for your help

Still have no idea to which view you are referring.
Also need to know how you migrated your old data and whether you might have
more than one Contacts Folder (use Folder List view to check).

In outlook 2007 then go to contacts. I then selected view from the top menu
and then as per previous post. Under Current View the 'Outlook data Files'
view is selected.

I previously exported my contacts from Outlook 2003 as a .pst file and then
imported them to Outlook 2007. I only have one contacts folder.

No. I asked which view of your Contacts Folder are you trying to sort.
Exporting and importing Outlook data is never the correct way to transfer
it. Doing so loses data and changes data and would easily explain the
differences you are seeing between old and new Contacts.
Try repairing your data file. Beyond that, I doubt there's much you can do.

i'm sorry I don't understand what you mean - I have clicked on the contact
folder and have my contacts listed in front of me. To the left of the screen
I have a list of current views options (business cards, address cards,
detailed address cards, phone list, by catagory, by company, by location,
outlook data files). currently the 'outlook data files' one is checked. Is
that what you are asking? If not, you may have to tell me what I need to do
to get the info you require - forgive me I am only a semi-competent on a PC.

If import/export is not the best way of moving contact info grateful if you
could let me know which way is. Also how do I 'repair my data file'? Sorry
to be a pain.

The recommended method to move data is just to move it - copy the pst and
open it on the new computer using file, open, outlook data file. Then move
the items to the new pst.

I'm not sure that importing is messing up your view though. Try making a
new view and see if you can replicate it using the same conditions.

Also, from the phone list view and look a second time for unexpected leading
spaces in the names - I had this happen to me, but I don't recall how those
contacts made it into outlook. There was not a space on open contacts - I
had to use in-cell editing to remove the space from the Full name field.

Yes. That is what I was asking. Diane has answered the rest of your
question. You should definitely try resetting your view or try using a
different view to see if that remedies the problem. You should also repair
your data file after an attempted import. Use the Inbox Repair Tool for
that:
