Outlook 2003 shutdown

MAY THE GREAT COMPUTER IN THE SKY LOOK DOWN ON YOU WITH FAVOR, it fixe
it. I have been fighting this for months. I did try the ol
right-click and delete on the logs but that just hung Outlook so
abandoned it. I didn't even think about data file management.

I do want to add a couple notes. To get rid of the WinFax Logs yo
must have WinFax Controller running. I don’t keep the controller on a
I don’t send many faxes anymore. I got the same hang as right-clickin
when I tried the data file management so I slammed everything
rebooted, start Winfax Controller then Outlook and was able to dump th
WinFax Logs.

I like WinFax when it works but I have had more trouble over the year
with that one program than anything else I run, and I run A LOT o
software.

Thanks again,

Ji

Anybody else still having this problem?

Am assuming that my cause isn't the Winfax Pro thing since I don'
have it installed..

Everything else about it matches what's happening with me.

Likewise we do not have winfax installed and are still getting th
problem.

Clues are building up on this thread - any more from anyone else

I have a friend who is also having the problem but doesn't have WinFax.
What he found is that he has a sync tool for his PocketPC that i
causing his problem. Once he removed it the problem went away. Don'
know what his long term repair is going to be (or has been) but tha
may be a place to look.

Hmm.. Sync tool as in a Activesync?

I have that running, so a possibility...

Trouble is that I rely so much on keeping my Pocket PC and Deskto
synced that I can't get rid of it..

jgeidl - Just did a mini test, and you are absolutely correct.. (In m
case anyway..)

I opened up Outlook, got my messages etc.. And then closed it, and th
taskbar icon stayed (as per usual) with the whole "not responding
message when I tried to anything with it..

While that was still happening, I took my Pocket PC out of it'
cradle, and voila - Outlook finished closing..

Damn.. Am rather happy that I now know what the problem, but mor
than a little annoyed at the cause of it..

Outlook 2003 implements a change in how it exits if some synching
software started Outlook first and still has the PDA in the cradle
when you try to exit Outlook from the user interface. Previous
versions killed that session and exited Outlook completely. Outlook
2003 doesn't exit if the PDA is still in the cradle.

So there are 2 options. First remove the PDA from the cradle before
you exit Outlook. Second option is to start up Outlook yourself with
no PDA in the cradle and then start the synching software after
Outlook starts. In both cases Outlook should then be able to
completely exit.

Heya Ken..

I tried the second option you gave (open outlook, then sync) bu
outlook still stayed open after I closed it..

Personally, I think I'll just live with it the way it is.. Now that
know what the cause is, it's a minor annoyance, but one that I can liv
with..

Could it possibly be a problem with using Outlook as an Exchange clien
in "Cached Exchanged Mode"? Or checking the "Download Public Folde
Favorites"?

I've got both checked, because it indicated that I wouldn't be able t
use the Junk Mail redirector in normal Exchange mode.

It sounds like, since some of you found a problem with syncing to PDAs
that this might be related. I don't have anything to sync with, excep
in a way it's syncing with out Exchange server...

Just in case it is of any help I have managed to find our problem was
the Browse Control Client supplied by Codework.

Outlook now shuts fine since uninstalling Browse Control.

We have found what is causing our Outlook2003 to not close properly - a
Internet browsing utility caused Browse Control. The BC suppliers ar
now writing a patch to overcome this for us.

So from all I have read above it appears that Outlook2003 has th
'ability' to get snagged by a whole range of other software - sync
s/w, browse control, winfax etc. This makes sorting the proble
difficult unless you have one of the previously identified pieces o
software. Whether this is a bug in Outlook or the other software i
not for me to say except that to provide a single solution it woul
seem to require MS to change something in Outlook. Anybody know Bill

This problem started for me when I put last Microsoft Update on m
computer. I don't know what the update did, but this shutting dow
problem started immediately. The only resolution I have found is t
close Outlook with File, Close. If you close Outlook with the X in th
upper right corner of the window it will leave Outlook open in th
processes. File, Close will not

Another interesting thing about this..

To recap, my problem is caused by Activesync.. (Don't know whether this
is specific to Activesync or not :)

ANYWAY.. I installed Attachment Options
(http://www.slovaktech.com/attachmentoptions.htm) - Which, but sheer
and total coincidence is a program from Ken who posted in this forum
earlier.. freaky...I only noticed as I was about to type this..) So I
installed that, and it changed the problem entirely.. Now the taskbar
icon doesn't stay there anymore after you close Outlook.. And in some
cases, it does close down completely.. Some times it doesn't though
(the process OUTLOOK.EXE is still running, but no taskbar icon..)

Personally, I rather have the icon showing if it's still running in
the background, so I've uninstalled AO..

The damn icon wouldn't both me so much if it were actually USEFUL.. I
mean, If I close Outlook and the icon stays there, yeah it's annoying,
but I could live with it if, when I clicked the taskbar icon, Outlook
opened.. Instead of just getting the Not Responding message..

Oh... one more thing.. Weffie - What program is causing your outlook
not close? (Activesync, Winfax etc)..

I tried File -> Exit and it didn't work.. still have the taskbar
icon...

I don't know what program was keeping Outlook from closing completely.
Sorry, File, Close did not work for you. I gave up and reformatted my
harddrive. I no longer use Internet Explorer or Outlook. I have no
more patience with Microsoft screwing up there own products.

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook]

The behavior of Outlook was changed in Outlook 2003 in regard to how
it handles a user shutdown if an Outlook session was started first
using automation before the user opens Outlook. Previously, if the
user closed Outlook then Outlook shut down completely, terminating any
ActiveSynch or other application Outlook session. In Outlook 2003 the
session is kept open unless the user has shut down the PDA or removed
it from the cradle.

The system tray icon can be flaky in cases like that.

Another factor is if you are running any software that does script
stopping, like Norton or McAfee's Hawk. Hawk allows you trust various
programs such as COM addins, Norton doesn't. If an addin or other
program creates an instance of Outlook in code while Outlook is
running (a standard technique) the script stopper will crash Outlook
and/or hang it. I recently discovered how to work around Norton's
crashes, but unless the software author is aware of the problem and
the workaround the only other options are to not run that software or
to disable the script stopper.

I don't use WinFax or Hawk nor do I have a PDA attached at this time. I just
want it to work correctly. Fay
