Outlook 2003 shutdown

I am using O2K3 on a WindowsXP Pro client machine. When I open Outlook the
first time in the morning everything goes well on the surface. When I try to
restart Outlook it will not start. When I look in the Processes section of
the Windows Task Manager Outlook is always listed there. Once I end that
instance of Outlook I can start Outlook. I looked in the Knowledge Base and
didn't find an answer. Why isn't Outlook completely shutting down? Thanks
for the help.

Are you closing Outlook or just minimizing it?
Do you have any addins installed or do you run any macros?

With O2K3 on WXP Outlook can be "Minimized to the Tray"
perhaps it is still running in the tray (Bottom Toolbar on the right
side with small icons).

I am having that same issue with Outlook 2003 and was hoping someone had
found a resolution. It seems if I am using POP3, Outlook 2003 refuses to
shut down, and I too have to kill it through task manager. I don't see the
issue when connecting to my Exchange server. Could there be a problem with
configuring multiple profiles with this newer version. Also, if I enable
cached mode, Outlook 2003 always crashes on me. Is cached server mode the
update to offline folders?

When I open Outlook there is an icon in the notification area. When I double
click on the icon I get the following message.

"Outlook is not responding If you are using an Exchange Server email
account, you can cancel pending server requests by clicking the Outlook icon
in the notification area, and then clicking Cancel Service Request on the
shortcut menu."

Once Outlook is closed I right click as well as double click and never get
the chance to Cancel the services. Ah, I just right clicked with Outlook
open and there it is. I also notice that Hide When Minimize is unchecked. I
checked it, I minimized O was a taskbar button. Once I minimize it Outlook
is hidden but I can't maximize Outlook after minimized.

No macros are being ran.
The addins are as follows
McAfee VirusScan Outlook Email Scanner
Delegate Access
Deleted Item Recovery
Exch Extensions commands
Exch Ext property pages
Fax Server Ext
TeamStatus Form

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
Fay

I am having this same problem with my POP3 servers. When
I close outlook, the icon stays in the tray, but I get
the same message as the post below. If anyone has a
suggestion or a solution, could you e-mail it to me? I
suck as using newsgroups.

Are any of you using Exchange server email?
If so, do you know what version?

Did you ever get the problem fixed???
I have the same problem.

I un-installed Outlook 2003 and re-installed OutlookXP and XP worked
fine. I also shut down all non-window applications and it still
failed. Could it be some win-s setting?

thanks

I also have this problem.

Talked to Microsoft and we established it worked fine if I set u
Outlook 2k3 for Pop but had the problem if I set it to our Exchange 5.
server.
At this point she said it must be an Exchange problem and I would hav
to pay 180 gbp to talk to that team!

Any ideas anyone?
Thank

I am having the same problem with only one machine of 5 running XP Pr
and Office 2003. I have no COM addins and have removed everything els
I can think of.

There goes Microsoft's explanation. Although I have to say that when I
point Outlook at a pop3 account the problem disappears.

I know you will have thought about this already but was there anything
special / different about the upgrade / install of Office 2k3 on the
problem machine?

J

jgeidl

Alberto,

I have tried about everything I know how to do. This machine is no
more no less unique than any other that I am not having problems with.
I even went so far as to try a safe boot with nothing running except
network stuff and had the same problem so this whole idea that it is an
interaction between Outlook and something else is not a reality. I am
about fit to be tied. :)

Add me to the list of people who are having trouble with Outlook 200
shutting down. The odd part is, it didn't do it "right away" -- i
started a few WEEKS after I installed it.

Has anyone uninstalled and reinstalled to see if it corrects th
problem?

fyi - I have my Outlook connected to an Exchange 6.5 server here a
home, and am now using it at work as well connecting to a 5.5 serve
there. It intermittently refuses to shut down at work - sometimes i
will successfully do it, though. How weird is that..

Latest snippet is that if the affected users start up Outlook at th
start of the day and closes at the end it shuts down ok. If you ope
it up and then try to shut it down within a couple of minutes it doe
not close properly.

Yes we have tried reinstalling by the way

I am also having the same issue that Oulook 2003 will not shut down
When I formatted my laptop and re-installed Windows XP Pro. I pu
Office 2003 on the system, connected to our Exchange 2003 server an
experienced the issue.

We have also recently moved to Exchange 2003 to a new box so it is
fresh install. I am still having the same issue.

Currently, I am not running any local anti-virus. Email is scanned a
the server level. So it is not a workstation antivirus problem.

I have tried Word as my editor and used plain text. Both setting wil
still result in the same issue.

My computer was fully patched after installing.

I also notice that if a program such as Peachtree Accounting or Worldo
(document management system), creates an email (to send an invoice o
document), the email is created and sent but the originatin
application locks. It seems to be Outlook does not want to releas
control.

I hope a fix is found/release soon as this is annoying at best.

Is anyone else using Adobe 6.0 standard? I am just wondering what migh
be in common between all the troubled systems. Others in our offic
seem to be fine with Outlook 2003 at this time but each system is on
different hardware platform and have different applications. All hav
the document management system and Peachtree. I think they may hav
Adobe 6.0 standard so this may not be a cause.

David,

For what it's worth, I am not using Peachtree and I am using Adobe 6.
Pro but I have the Adobe on all the machines and do not have th
problem except on one machine.

Hi All,
In reguards to the Outlook remaining in the tray, even after shuttin
it down, the infamous 'Outlook is not responding If you are using a
Exchange Server email account, you can cancel pending server request
by clicking the Outlook icon in the notification area, and the
clicking Cancel Service Request on the shortcut menu' error.
I have been messing with this for a month now trying to get answer
to no avail. Then I just happened to dig a little deeper into m
outlooks settings , and folders. I do not use exchange server, so I sa
no corelation with that, BUT what i did notice, was a feature that
rarely used, yet was installed as a part of Outlook Folders, Symantec
Winfax Pro, so even though I was not using Exchange, Winfax was stil
trying to contact some unknown host, as I never set it up to enable fa
via email. So after going into file data file management, and removin
the winfax folder stores, my Outlook runs, and shuts down as normal
Dont know if this tidbit will help anyone else, but it cured my Outloo
tray icon blues,no more going through task manager to shut it down
:rolleyes
