Outlook 2003 - How do you turn off "You've got mail" notification?

Guest

I just installed Outlook 2003 and would like to disable the voice
announcement telling me "You've got mail." Since the little guy can't seem
to count, I would really like to silence him. Where is he hiding?

Control Panel > Sounds and audio > sounds tab > new mail notification or

open outlook and select tools | options | prefs. tab | email options |
advanced e-mail options. (checkbox is about 1/2 down)

The little guy is still croaking!

Under XP Home: Control Panel, Sounds and Audio, Sounds, New Mail
Notification set to 'none'

and,

In Outlook 2003: Tools, Options, Preferences, e-mail options, advanced
e-mail options, all check boxes in the 'When new items arrive in my Inbox'
section cleared

and,

system restarted.

do u have some sort of third party application installed? (e.g. ICQ
perhaps?)

No, was trying to figure out what you have installed that is causing the
machine to make a noise when it shouldn't. (Unchecking the play a sound
when new mail arrives or setting the sound event to none should have been
enough. Only other option is an Inbox rule that plays a sound or some 3rd
party application that is watching the Inbox.)

Thanks for your help. We've looked in the obvious places and I just looked
at Windows messenger and found nothing there.

The voice alert was not part of my OL 2000 configuration and appeared
immediately after upgrade to OL 2003 (MS Office 2003 Pro).

this is driving me totally bonkers. I have turned off all my sound settings
that I could think of as well as taken the advice here and this guy is still
talking. I am near to the point of regressing back to a previous version of
outlook as well as a previous version of office. There should be an easy way
to silence the guy as well as he never should have been there in the first
place.

ok I also just tried to set up a rule to have a different sound play and
that blasted irritating guy plays instead. Someone has to know how to fix
this. I'm almost to the point of calling Microsoft and paying the 35.00 to
get this fixed.

Help from the masters would be great. thanks

Don't bother calling Microsoft - this is not something that is part of
Outlook. You've got some sort of add-on program that is doing this - check
any programs you've installed to "help" with Outlook, or run an
anti-spyware product to see if you have spyware or adware that's decided to
"help" you out...

Search your hard drive for all sound files, locate the one containing the
voice and delete it. That will guarantee he'll never speak to you again.

I don't know - as I say, this is not Outlook doing this. Try going to
Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices, and look on the Sounds
tab for "New Mail Notification". Is there are sound set for that?

It has been driving me crazy too. Do you have a Toshiba Notebook? I do and
it's a Toshiba thing. A little voice from my computer told me what to do.
Actually when the Toshiba Speech System screensaver was on it would not stop
talking and my daughter asked me to shut it up.

Here is what you do according to the Toshiba Speech System instructions
("Removing Mail Speak from Microsoft Outlook 2000/2002/2003"):

Start Microsoft Outlook.

Click the Tools menu, and then select Options.

Click the Other tab.

Click the Advanced Options button.

Click the Add-In Manager button.

Click the Mail Speak (TOSHIBA) checkbox (it should be blank) to turn the
system OFF.

Click OK to close the Add-In Manager dialog box.

Click OK to close the Advanced Options dialog box.

Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

Mail Speak is now disabled in Outlook.

MANY, MANY thanks to Bruce G! This is exactly the right solution. This should
go out to all Toshiba laptop users. That voice is HORRIBLE!

This is not a standard mail notify wav he is talking abou here. When you
start outlook 2003 you get a voice synthisis guy announcing "You've got 32
unread emails."

We want this guy to shut up. We have all of the sounds turned off in both
outlook and sounds under control panel, yet this little ***ker keeps
blabbing. He actively counts the mail. It started when outlook 2003 was
installed and has nothing to do with third party ware. Since the number
changes, it's not a wav file, it's voice synthesized.

Yea Bruce!! That was it. It was a Toshiba thing. You have just ended 18
months of aggravation! thanks
