My last computer with Win 98 would download music from the Newsgroups for hours. I could check tons of files to download and go to bed and find them all downloaded in the morning

With my new XP cxomputer Something called "SmartHeap" comes up says I am out of memory and shuts down the application I have 200Plus memory, more than I had in the old one. Why is this happening? What can I do to allow this computer to download endlessly like my Win98?

This story may not b relavent, or it may be a key to your solution: I had a
win98 PC based on a Pentium 2 with 128 Meg RAM, and 10 Gig of disk. On that
old PC I could play an interactive video CD of the SouthWest US National
Parks (Zion, Bryce, etc). My new PC is XP, Pentium 4, 1Gig RAM, 120 Gig
disk, bigger in every way. The video CD fails to play on the new PC, with
an error saying that I do not have enough swap space. I actually have over
1Gig of swap, in addition to the 1Gig of RAM. A CD is about 650 Meg, so the
whole thing should fit into either the swap or the RAM. But I get an error.
Why? I contacted the CD maker and they acknowledeged that the software on
the CD was of a win3.1 to win95 era, and it can "get confused" with large
amounts of real RAM and/or wap space. They were very kind to send me free
of charge a newer version of the CD.

So, is it possible that your software is too old to properly reognize the
new large PC that you now have? Is there a newer version of that software?

How much is 200 plus memory? Windows XP takes at least 128 megs of ram to operate. Really needs 256. What you are doing 512 would work alot better.
