Oulook keeps hanging

Outlook 2003, part of office 2003. Single user installation, no exchange
server, connecting to POP3 accounts. Set to hide when minimised.

The program keeps hanging. The icon in the bottom right of the task bar
says it is synchronising and it changes to the icon I expect to see for
that, but then it just sits there and says it is not responding if I try and
open it. Usually it works for a whiles then goes wrong.

I can close it in task manager and it always seems to open OK after that and
works for a few hours then it goes wrong again.

Any idea what may cause this or steps to put it right?

I have McAfee scanning but nothing else I know of. I may try turning off
McAfee email scanning but I doubt that is the problem - I used Outlook
express all day yesterday with McAfee scanning but had no problem. I think
it is an Outlook issue.
