Hey folks,

Instead of trying to explain the issue here, but please reply here, I have created a page with

I could not see the original in Firefox or IE 6
Try to see if this page on my site opens properly in Firefox & IE6 - it does
for me.
http://www.eleanorstravels.com/original.htm
I doubt that it is a Photoshop issue ... but, for the life of me, I have no
idea what to suggest, since it worked fine for me!

Eleanor, did you save the image, as I can see it. All I know is that the original image was saved
from PhotoShop.

Could the issue be with selecting a setting that does progress something...

Yes, it's saved on my desktop as well as in the site. Can you save it from
the original.htm page?
Do you want me to send it to you as an attachment? I did nothing to the
file, except open it in WindowsXP viewer.
And I don't have a clue about the middle image ... that's very strange too.

Thanks for the feedback, there is no need to send me the image.

The original looks like it was saved as a progressive .jpg
- not yet supported by all browsers
Progressive .jpgs save the image as multiple scans and display it in stages or passes
That's why the NS4.08 shows the 1st pass and never completes, and the IE doesn't show anything

You need to reopen the image and change it to a normal jpg

Hi Thomas,

I would guess that your photo is damaged on the site, possibly because of a
line break during the upload. This has happened to me. Have you tried
uploading it again? If that does not work, try making a copy of the photo
with a different name and uploading that. Don't ask me why, but sometimes
that works.

The negative with lines looks like a damaged file. And if you right-click on
the red X and select >properties, it says "file not available." That sounds
like a damaged file.

Wally S

S

Stefan B Rusynko

Not all - especially if it was saved w/ too many scan levels

| But a progressive jpg would be supported by IE6.

Ok, folks what you are missing is that users can come to the site, and then pay for an ad, then they
upload a image to be included with their ad submission. The process is totally automated. The only
person involved in the process is the user.

Think of it this, you pay some money, then you upload your image, and all you see is a red X or
nothing, but on your desktop you can see your image with no problem. I need to write instructions or
a note to tell these users what format not to use when create their images in PhotoShop, etc. so
that their images will always display. Many of the user of this site will more than likely be using
PhotoShop as their graphic application.

The file is really there.

Not Available under Image Properties applies only to: Image Type and size.

The file may be there but incompletely uploaded. This can happen if there is
a line break during the uploading, but it will appear as if the file were
there. Have you tried going on the site with FP and directly looking at the
photo? I understand your project, but I strongly doubt that this is a
Photoshop problem. I have Photoshop Elements, and I have never had a problem
either with progressives or any other, especially not with IE6.

The negative-effect does not look like an intermediate progressive scan.
Those look like they are made of little colored squares. And if the image
type and size are not available, that means there is something wrong with
the file. I use a lot of photos, and every time I have had a problem like
this it has been because of a damaged file on the site.

What you could do is tell your clients to use the "save for web" feature and
save the photo as jpg and check "optimized." If that does not work, the
problem is with your server or due to line breaks during uploading.

If you want to tell me how to upload, I can try saving some photos in
Photoshop Elements and try uploading them to your site.

Wally S

T

Thomas A. Rowe

There is nothing wrong with the way the image was uploaded. If there was a problem with the image
being uploaded, after I downloaded it I would not have been able to see it in Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer application.

The first image is the original, as uploaded by the user, the second image is the first image as
viewed in NS4.08, the third image is the first image as viewed in Windows Fax and Picture Viewer.

I downloaded the phot from your site, loaded it into Photoshop elements, and
saved it with >save for web. I checked "optimize" and set the quality at 80.
This is a normal way to save in Photoshop elements. Then I uploaded the
picture to the web at http://www.dipika.org/~exp/thomas.htm

It comes out okay. The problem is not with Photoshop. Try saving it as I
did. that should work.

Wally and everyone else, I can fix the photo so that it display on the web correctly, seen by the
last example on the page, however that is not the solutions to this issue.

The issue is that I have a client's site where users can post Ads to sell their creations. With
their Ads they can upload a photo after they have paid the fee. This is a completely automated
process. I do not want to have to got in and correct photos that don't display. The bottom-line is
that user has paid their money, and their photo doesn't appear, it is not a server issue, connection
issue or anyway related to how the image is being uploaded, it is how the image was originally saved
from PhotoShop.

I do not own PhotoShop or any of it's offsprings.

However, I do need to write instructions that tell these users what settings NOT to use when saving
their photos before uploading them. It is my understanding that most of these users are not web
smart, but do use PhotoShop either on the PC or MAC.

Could it be as simple as adding a warning on the upload page stating that "Images saved as
progressive jpegs will not display." Or preview the image in your browser before uploading by right
clicking, selecting "open with" and then selecting Internet Explorer.

I would think that folks that are "savvy" enough to use Photoshop would be savvy enough to
understand that.!!

( but there I go thinking again )

Steve,

I beginning to think is it not a progressive jpeg, since IE and NS should be able to display them.

However can you or someone else that have PhotoShop, take the last image on the page and open in
PhotoShop and save it for me as a progressive jpeg image?
