OT: Need independent computer shop - Chicago area

D

Doug Kanter

Sorry if this is somewhat OT, but I'm casting about for help. My company's
shipping a computer to a sales rep in Naperville IL, and he's probably going
to need someone who can walk into his home and assist with getting him
hooked up to the web. The sales rep's pretty much clueless, so it would take
years to work through various settings over the phone with him. We have a
tech person at our NYC home office who *may* be able to do this over the
phone, but I'd like to cover all the bases, in case we need someone quickly.

If anyone's used a local computer shop out that way, I'd appreciate the
name.

Carey, I don't mean to sound ungrateful for your contribution, but I have 3
local friends whose machines were brutally raped by "helpers" from Best Buy.
No way we'd use them. We're running a business. We need someone who works
under the pretense that they will be given a one-way boat ride on Lake
Michigan if they don't get it perfect the first time.

No kidding - you would be better off flying someone in from LA to work
on them, and you would save money compared to the damage a bunch of
desperate 'geeks' could due to your data and systems.

Some computer users can screw up ANY machine, regardless of the OS,
especially when it involves a router and VPN configuration. No thanks.

So you would recommend using BestBuy, like Carey?

That's plan B. We were hoping to find someone here who had used a particular
service, rather than throw darts.

Set the computer up in your office, or at your home to test, then make
sure that you give the remote user a Linksys Router or some other NAT
Box.

If you setup the computer, test the router, and then make sure it all
connects to the office, it's as simple as connect cables and turn it all
on. Use your digital camera, take pictures, include them in the box you
ship to him.

I wish it were that simple. I'm not located at the office where the computer
now sits in a box.

No - haven't heard from him.

Strange. He contributes here regularly. There are 2 of his websites anyway.
You might contact him, since this whole thread doesn't seem to be going anywhere
useful for you IMHO.
