Recently made a change to Tools|Options so that the
default file opening would be my commonly used folder.

Now whenever I open Excel it tries to open all files
within that folder (even those that are not *.xls) and
now it will not allow me to go back in to Tools|Options
to change the settings back.

Everytime I try to do this a request to send error report
to Microsoft comes up.

Version: Excel 97
OS: MS XP Professional

Any suggestions?

You have put the entry in the wrong area. Anything you put in
Tools>options>general>alternate start-up folder, will be what Excel opens on
startup.

To clear the entry, just take all the files out of the folder to another
location and open XL. Clear the entry and replace the files.

Your entry wants to go in 'Default file location'
