Opening MSFT WORD DOC attachments

XP machine died. Am a newbie with Vista Home Premium and the bundled
'Windows Mail" Email client, (WinMail). Have used OE in the past on an XP
machine before opted for OUTLOOK. Now evaluating WinMail before deciding on
Windows Live OUTLOOK 2007 or Thunderbird, Eudora etc.

Am experiencing a problem with WinMail opening MSFT WORD attachments. When
double clicking the attachment, am getting message "This file does not have
a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the Set Associations control panel." When I go to check the
default file association, it is already associating file type "DOC" with
Microsoft Office Word. (I have WORD2007.) If I save the attachment with
"save as", it defaults the file type to "DOC", (sender probably using WORD
97 - 2003), then I can then open it with WORD2007. Have not experienced the
same problem with opening attached "JPG" or "PDF" or AOL Email messages;
that is, it will open just by double clicking on the icon/label. Any ideas
or suggestions. Thanks in Advance.

With WORD2007, you may need to also associate .DOCX with it.

Dave,
That is exactly the error I'm getting and thanks for the link. I'll look
into the suggested fix. I don't normally edit a DOC attachment. I just
want to "browse" it to see if it is worthwhile saving. Sometimes, it's
another one of those endless Internet mail "jokes".

UPDATE ON THIS ISSUE:
docfix_1_2 downloaded from winhelpon.com didn't resolve the problem.
Searching the Windows Vista Community(Windows Mail & Contacts) archive gave
me a thread started on 09/27/2007 (Can't open *.doc attachments). This lead
to a post by Barry Haigh on 10/15/2007 who suggested setting the association
for .doc to Adobe and then resetting it back to MSFT WORD. Tried that and
it works. Go figure!
