opening jpg attachments

I am having a problem with opening any attachments I get emailed to me,
especially if they are pictures, in particular jpg files. I try to open it
and it says there is no application associated with it and my only option is
to save it, which i don't like to do, since most are just temporary things.
I know in the past with my other computer i was able to pick out an
application to use to open the file but it won't even give me that option. i
am not even sure if this is a problem associated with my earthlink email
acct. or a microsoft problem. earthlink says it is not really their issue,
but i'm not sure. can anyone help? It shouldn't be this hard to open and
view a picture.......
