Opening folders in folder view as default

I can only find the options to open folders in common task view or in
classic view. Is there a way to have folders open in folder view (i.e. with
the folder tree in the left pane) as the default?

Folder Options -> File Types -> Folder -> Advanced -> hi-lite 'Explore' and click 'set as default'

It is not clear to me what you perceive as the difference between
"classic" view and seeing the directories (folders) in the lefthand pane,
which is the default in Windows Explorer here. Clicking the FOLDERS
button on the menubar changes to common tasks in the lefthand pane.

The behavior of the directory listing can further be refined via TOOLS
menu|FOLDER OPTIONS|VIEW. Click the "display simple folder view..." choice.

Right click either the Windows Explorer Start menu item, or a Desktop icon
for it, left click Properties, on the Shortcut tab, in the Target box,
change what's already there to read:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\

Then click the Apply and OK buttons. If Windows XP is installed on a drive
other than C:, type the letter of that drive. If you don't have a Windows
Explorer desktop icon, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, then RIGHT
click Windows Explorer, left click: Send To/Desktop (create
shortcut).DeskLink, which will put an icon on the Desktop for easier access.

dev,

When I chose "classic" view, folders would open with just the contents
showing. I could click on the Folders icon to get the tree pane, but I was
trying to skip that step.

Changing the default command to "explore" as per Keith's suggestion did the
trick.

Thanks,
B.
