How to open folder without Navigation pane

D

donwb

When I double click a desktop folder, it opens in a view
that shows the Folders Navigation pane on the left and
the folders on the right - ie the classic Windows Explorer style.

Is there any way to make the double click open it without showing
the nav pane om the left?

It can be done by right clicking the folder and selecting "Open"
rather than "Explore" from the context menu,
but how to make the double click do this?

Hi Don,

Does clicking the Folders icon to remove the left pane and clicking File
(hold down Shift) and click Close, cause it to remember next time it's
opened?

When you right click on the folder, is Explore highlighted?

When you check the following registry key, is explore listed in the right
hand pane next to (Default)?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

If that's the case you might want to try one of the following options.

Option #1.

Open the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> regedit.exe) and navigate to this
registry key.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

In the right hand pane, right click on (Default) and select Modify from the
menu.
Remove explore from the Value Data box and leave it empty.

Option #2.

Go to Control Panel and double click Folder Options.
Click on the File Types tab.
Scroll down to [None] Folder.
Click on Folder to highlight it and hit the Advanced button.
In the Edit File Type dialog, click on Open in the Actions box.
Hit the Set Default button.

Note: Keep in mind that making the above change will mean that all the
folders on your computer, not just the ones on your Desktop, will now have
the default action set to Open.

Good luck

Hi Nepatsfan
Thanks for your response.
The reason for my original question is that a week ago, desktop folders had
open as the default, whilst any folder appearing in Windows Explorer
had Explore as the default.
Something changed (I know not what) such that the desktop default became
"explore",
but the Win Explorer default remained "explore" on double clicking.

Your suggestions did work, but as you said, ALL folders now have the default
action set to open,
which is more than I wanted; it was just the desktop folders I was hoping to
address.

When doing your suggested option#2, I noticed "[None] File Folder"
on the "File Types" tab, what is the difference between this and
"[None] Folder"? Could something be done here.
