When I open up Windows Exploere, My Computer, My Network Places, COntrol
Panel etc. I'm in permanaent Folder view i.e the the folder icon is pressed.
I wish to chand e this so folder view in not the default view.

I've been to Tools/Folder Options/File Types and located [NONE] Folders and
tried to set to "open" as the default. However when I try to select this
option the "set default" grey scales out so can't set. Can anyone help in
resolving ????

Terry,

I'm bashing the keyboard again......It's not the folder options that is the
problems it is the default view that appears when say Windows Explorer or
Control Panel etc is opened. There are two "panes". The left hand pane no
longer shows original default settings or so called "common tasks". This
now displays a "folder tree" which is not what I want to be displayed. I can
set it back to "common tasks" view by clicking the "folders" view button on
the toolbar

As explained, I've been to Tools/Folder Options/File Types and located
"[NONE] Folders " and tried to set to "open" as the default. This I've been
told would resolve problem and set to original default setting. However when
I try to select this "open"
option the "set default" button grey scales out so can't set.

Further research indicates that the reason the button is greyed out is that
"open" is (already) set to default. However still get folder tree view when
common tasks view is required as default. Perhaps it requires a Registry
value change???????

Navigate here:

You can read if the issue is the same as what you're experiencing on the
web page.

Click on F and scroll down to "Folder Options - Restricted". Download
the INF file to your Desktop, right click on the file and select
Install. Or download it directly here:

You could also try "Folder Views - Keep Settings" which is a little

Hello barrowhill

Have you tried going to the General tab in Folder Options and clicking
the radio button for "Show common tasks in folders"?

TTerry,

Your first option didn't describe my problem. I tried your second but still
My Computer, My Network Places etc open up in Folder (tree) view in left
hand pane.

I have other older PC's and opening up same elements opens up showing common
tasks in left hand pane. I don't know why can't get main PC to do the same
???
