Opening attachments and links in messages

Cascadian

For some reason clicking on an internet link in an email message will not
take me to the internet, I only get an error message. However if I have
internet express already open when I click on the link it opens the link. I
am also having problems opening attachments. Powerpoint slide shows comes up
with an error message saying it cannot find the file. The same goes for jpg
files. I have to save the attachments to my computer before I can double
click on the files to open them. It seems to have started after I installed
the latest IExplorer. Can anyone help me to get my Windows mail to function
the way it used to?

Have you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

NB: Uninstalling IE8 should resolve the behavior but you should not have
encountered it in the first place if IE8 was installed properly.

For he first issue do the following:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Internet
Explorer". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Inability to open attachments is a known issue that is affecting some who
installed IE8. The best workaround at this time is to uninstall IE8:

After posting last night I continued reading other posts. It seems to me
that the simplest solution at this time would be to remove IE8. Thank you
for your responses. I never had any problems with IE7 so I will change back.

Everytime I try to open a link in Outlook I receive the message: operations
has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. I have
tried to change my settings but the message still continues. Any suggestions
on what I should do next?

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2)
in your first post.

If you really mean "Outlook" you are in the wrong newsgroup.
The newsgroup to which you posted is for the Windows Mail program.
You are more likely to find Outlook experts in the Outlook newsgroup:

microsoft.public.outlook.general (via NNTP), or via the web:
