opening a Mac created ppt file in Windows

I received a file (myfile.ppt) that was created using
powerpoint on a Mac and can't open it on my Windows 2000
MS Powerpoint 2000 program. When I try to open the file
on my W2K machine I receive the following error message:

"PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by
myfile.ppt."

Any idea why the files are not compatible? Are Mac ppt
files normally compatible with Windows?
