How to open PowerPoint 97 files in 2007?

I get the following response when trying to open old work files created with
PowerPoint 97

"PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by ...... .ppt"

I read somewhere that there was a registry fix for a similar problem when
using PowerPoint 2003 SP1 but can't find this and don't know if it will work
with 2007.
