Open Office installation report?

O

omega

I'm considering installing Open Office. Of course I can find out when I get
to the install, but it'd be nice to know something in advance. How civil it
is, as far as staying in its own directory.

Does it try to put things in the system directory? Or how about in the
"application data\common files" directory? I actually suspect that it intends
the latter. If my suspicious are wrong, however, I'd love to know, as I'd
then be much more willing to proceed with an install.

Finally, although less important than the files spew issue, does anyone have
a report on number of new regkeys it adds?

Karen,

Use JV16 Power tools and/or Total Uninstall run. If using JV16, mark all
registry entries as "old", then install OOo, and run JV16 again. It will
show all new registry entries. Total Uninstall shows just about all changes.

My overall feeling about OOo's hygiene is it's not too bad. It does add a
little Windows DLL and registry bloat, but not as bad as some very small
apps.

Serious question... are we still recommending jv16 in acf? Personally,
I have removed it from the 4 boxes I administer. Did I miss a thread on
this, somewhere?

Thanks.

Thanks, Steve. Too bad, I liked it a lot -- always part of a base
Windows install, for me, for the last few years. A *big* letdown. }:O\

I know you prolly know, but your sig delimiter is b0rked. Makes for
lots of trimming...

His sig delimiter worked for me -- perhaps XNews is compensating for
whatever error is in it.

You prolly added this to your xnews.ini -- it fixes busted OE sigs.

SigDashRegex=^\-\-\s?$

I'll have to find a way to implement this with slrn. Thanks for the
reminder.

To Steve: your sig is still b0rked. You don't get off *that* easily!

hehe woops ;o) (I'm afraid you'll have to blame OE for this one though, I've
tried literally everything to sort it out).

That's it -- I always forget I put that in the .ini file. (It's been
in my configuration for so long, I don't even know who I copied it
from...)

slrnners, here's the fix:

% Define regular expression used to detect signatures
% Thanks to ras2 (nsr)
strip_sig_regexp "^-- ?$"

Ah, much better. }:O)

Everything except updating to the latest version of Outlook Express.

I have tracked an installation of the previous stable version with
InCtrl5, but not the latest one. However, I will attempt an answer as
this is the kind of question I have before installing many a program.
For an office suite, I find it admirably restrained. There is a
a directory called said:

This, I suspect, depends heavily upon the choice of file association
one has during the install process. Yes, a lot of keys are added,
mainly in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hierarchy, if you bind it with all the
types it can handle. But that's inevitable, isn't it? Other than
that, use of the registry is sparse.

Take the above with a grain of salt. It is possible that they were
remnants of the previous version and do not apply to the latest one.

It has indeed been a long furlough !

Now that you mention it.........<G>

There was an item I'd been interested in: further completion of the author
column on the PL. Only, I'd planned to provide some data for some of the
empty spots, before bringing it up. That which means expending a bit of my
own time first, before handing you the next todo list. Hmm. Er.

Well, how about this as first agenda: an extension on the R & R time.
