Only Auto Answer on Data Coil

hi everyone

i just setup succesfully on using the Remote Desktop Connection on both of my desktop (host) and laptop (remote). everything works fine. i am using a direct modem dial-up connection. the only problem now i have is to make my host pc only will auto answer a modem/data call. currently my host pc will auto answer any call made to my home. is there a way to differential data and voice call? i am using a Haynes compatible V.90 56Kbps USB modem

by the way, each time i boot up my host pc, the incoming call little icon will be loaded at bottom right corner taskbar. is this normal? if i close it, how can i reload it again without rebooting

all you help is appreciated. thank you

Nothing built into the OS will do this... There are third party
devices that may be able to assist with this...

hi jeffrey

thanks for the reply. so do u have an idea where i can get the 3rd party software to differential a voice and a data call? can i put in ATS1=5 or (ATS0=5 which one) in the initial modem string settting so that at least the modem will only answer incoming call after 5 rings

Jeffrey said DEVICE - not software.
No software will be able to determine if a call is data or not until it
answers.

You can change the number of rings using the info in this article, I
believe:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;145879

You can turn on and off the answering function via a batch or command-line
procedure, which can be scheduled:

net start remoteaccess
net stop remoteaccess

These may help you out a little bit, but as Jeffrey says, you need a
hardware device--this is the kind of critter that allows you to use one
phone line for fax, modem, and answering machine, for example--or at least
that's my understanding--I have managed to survive without one so far, so I
don't have experience in how well they work.
