online 'freeware'

Some time/years ago I put forward the idea of having a similiar list of
free online tools, essentially free software that you access online
rather that from your HD. The idea was essentially poo-pooed as some
suggested these were not software programs as such, and as such OT for
this group even to discuss. Personally I disagree, in that I believe
with the increase in broadband many people can now easily run free
programs online. Also I have seen quite a few/many replies to software
requests referred to online tools, and these have been in no way 'poo-
pooed' by anyone. In fact they seemed to have been gracefully accepted
as being a good thing. Given that - I was hoping I could put my
suggestion forward again and ask this group, especially the regulars,
if we could compile a catalog of URLs of online tools/software. I'd bee
happy to organise the list as much as I can but I would really like a
team approach. I wouldn't want to burden Susan and the other Priceless.
org team with this but any help would be appreciated. If I remeber
correctly, Susan suggested we could put a link on the pricelessware
website to a site that has all the URLs... mayb eif we ask really
nicely Susan could host it :) I love to hear from anyone with ideas etc.

A 'free online tool' page, would presumably consist of a page of links
with a short description for each. Sounds like an excellent idea! Well
done that man! Especially if your volunteering!

A good example of a 'free online tool' is the Bobby web site
accessibility check. I've used it ever since the downloadable Bobby
v3.2 went commercial.

On Line Trojan Scan

Trojan horses are a huge security threat. A Trojan is a program that
enters your computer undetected, giving the attacker who planted the
Trojan unrestricted access to the data stored on your computer.
Trojans can transmit credit card information and other confidential
data in the background. Trojans are often not caught by virus scanning
engines, because these are focused on viruses, not Trojans. Catching
such threats would require the use of a Trojan scanner.

[Online tools]

Do you consider shell accounts as being online services? If yes, there's plenty
of stuff you can do on one. You just need PuTTY.

Dunno. What is a shell account?

An account where you have access to an UNIX/Linux/BSD shell (command line).
Sort of having access to a UNIX-based system and running stuff.

For a test, try using Telnet. (SSH is better, but you must use Telnet to
register)

Telnet to "m-net.arbornet.org" and follow the prompts. (just select the default
settings). You will end at a shell menu, then you can just exit from the menu
and use a FreeBSD command line.

Hi Peter,

I don't know about everybody else but I got a little sidetracked. . . ;)

in answer to your question. . .

I would love to see more web pages on the PL site - whatever the group
is in favor of having.

Several people have FTP access now - more will be added if they are
creating web pages for the site. If someone *organizes* information and
wants me to create a web page that could probably be worked out too. :)

Comments from the group please.

Do you want such a page? If so, what should be on it?

I was hoping folk out there could email me the links and details as per
the normal pricelessware format and If they could try to allocate a
catergory as per the Preicelessware ones that would make it a whole lot
more compatible... As an idea maybe when this years voting starts we
could also include online freeware, with an [ONLINE] precursor to the
subject line???

I know that when AVG caught, but could not clear a virus I was
scrambling for online scanners. I figured the virus had the upper hand
on my drive and an online scan was my best hope.

What other types of online services are available?

While not freeware programs, downloaded, installed and executed, I can
see merit in listing services people find helpful. I recall trying in
vain to think of "Trend" and my browser wasn't working well in
goggling due to some infinite loop running from the malware.

I'm wondering how long the list will be. . .

I'd like to see the suggestions *posted* please. I agree that
category/subcategory info would be helpful.

re: web pages - a few suggestions. . .

We could have an online "software" web page formatted like the
Pricelessware category web pages.

or. . .

We could have a web page formatted like the ACF program information
pages (the category pages).

or. . .

I could *add* online "software" to the ACF program information pages -
with an on-line notation.

As an idea maybe when this years voting starts we
could also include online freeware, with an [ONLINE] precursor to the
subject line???

It seems to me the first questions are:

1. Is online software on-topic in ACF? (A lack of objections does not
necessarily mean approval. . .)

2. Should online software be listed on the PL web site?

re: the Pricelessware List

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2004/CumulativePL.htm

If you look at the Cumulative Pricelessware List you'll see a few online
notations in the first year or two - for instance -> Google (On-Line)
PL2001. Somewhere between then and now the group decided web sites were
not eligible for the PL.

We'll be reviewing "da rules" for PL2005 soon but it seems to me that
getting online software approved for inclusion in PL2005 might be a
tough sell.

I see a post from REMbranded mentioning online virus scanners - I think
there are quite a few sites for that subcategory. I've seen an online
calendar site mentioned several times. . . What else is out there?

At the end of the day it doesn't bother me either way if the ACfers
want it. I just thought it'd would be a good idea. By including the
[ONLINE] precursor those can ignore it, or can use it... no bother.

Nothing is constant except change itself... I understand many of the
die hards will scoff at online stuff being 'officially' included but
freeware is changing, and always will. The reality is there is more and
more online stuff being posted without so much as a hint of adverse
reaction... In fact my initial posting here was applauded and welcomed.
At the end of the day 1. its free, and 2. it's a computer program that
does good stuff for us.

If this gets all too hard then I'll throw in the towel, I'm only in
this for fun, freeware and fostering the spirit of giving freely.

I can identify with that. :)

I could create a temporary "webware" web page similar to the ACF Program
pages and start it with some of the suggestions that have already been
made. Does that sound like a good way to begin?

Thus encouraged :) I made *two* temporary web pages - Webware and Links:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/temp/Webware.php

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/temp/Links.php

The pages have columns for:

1. the category-subcategory
2. the name of the web site
3. a description of the "Webware" or other info
4. the URL

I used the categories-subcategories that are shown on the ACF Program
Info pages - just as a starting point. I made a temporary Links page
because our current Links page doesn't have much information - IMO it
could use a revision. . .

I did not add any sites yet - please post your recommendations (with all
the info I need to fill in the blanks) and I will have at it. ;)

Won't we need to conduct a vote or a poll or a "whatever", though,
before sites are added to the pricelesswarehome.org site?

There haven't been any objections so far to the idea of having a
"Webware" web page. . . there has been support for the idea.

There may be objections to *some* of the suggested "Webware" web sites.
.. . and there may be objections to *some* sites that are suggested for
the Links page. . .

Some sort of poll may be desirable at some point - I think we have to
see what people have to say after the sites are listed.

I've added a few sites that were recommended to the Webware page - sort
on the Category column to bring them to the top of the page.

More recommendations?

The only thing I have to recommend, so far, is that the links open in a
new "window" or "tab".

Hi Susan,
for now I have these:

ORGANIZERS2.10 Organizer: Notes
Site: aypwip
Desc: a workspace for creating notes
URL: http://www.aypwip.org/webnote/

INTERNET ? ?
Site: tinyurl
Desc: create a tiny URL
URL: http://tinyurl.com/

EDUCATION ? ?
Site: quickmath
Desc: answer common math problems
URL: http://www.quickmath.com/

A little note about the page
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2004/links2004PL.htm
In "Freeware Newsgroups" I'd like to see also alt.comp.freeware! :)
Otherwise, it would be better to write "Other Freeware Newsgroups".

Thanks again for all your work! :))
