Online but cannot Browse

Hi

Some of my machines cannot browse even though they are online (i can ping
any website). This happens intermittently using IE or Mozilla.

It looks as though my DNS client has been corrupted as when I am unable to
browse I can ping but cannot run any DNS queries (e.g. nslookup) or any other
TCP/IP services.

I did run Anti-Spyware and some of the machines were fixed but not others.

Any suggestion. I was thinking of reinstalling Windows altogether.

My thinking is that DNS client has been corrupted as I have the same problem
with Mozilla and IE. Hence I am thinking a fresh reinstall may help as the
DNS client files will get replaced.

I used XSoft anti-Spyware (and others) to cure the problem, it did help but
not completely

Hi,
This sounds like Winsock corruption.

If using XP SP2...
Log on as an administrator.
From Start> Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
netsh Winsock reset
Restart

To reset the Winsock catalog to the default configuration...
From a CMD window
netsh winsock reset catalog [Enter] or [OK]
Restart.
This will break the ability of some programs to connect to the net for
updates, etc. Those programs should be reinstalled.

If not running XP SP2, try WinsockXPFix from
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html or
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

There's a good chance that malware damaged the Winsock stack.
