one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency

Upon startup (repeatedly) I get an error message, "One of
your disks needs to be checked for consistency". Then,
once Windows has started, I get another error
message, "system has recovered from a serious error".
When I start IE, I get another error message, "Internet
explorer has encountered a problem and must close". I had
a problem with Norton Antivirus (my virus definitions are
up to date on my main computer, but they expired recently
on this computer, which is a backup, and I haven't yet
contacted Norton about this). I was unable to uninstall
or re-install NAV. I'm unable to install Service Pack 1 -
first the download stalled (dialup) and then I got an
error message. Now I can't get to the Microsoft website
to download a file I need to complete the installation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As far as being sure the machine is virus free, you could try scanning
in Safe Mode with a standalone virus checker like Stinger from McAfee
here:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Stinger covers about 30 of the most common viruses. If the machine is
really clean, you may have a hard drive problem. You can download a
drive diagnostic utility from the mftr.'s website - you usually make a
bootable floppy from this file and then boot the sick machine with the
floppy. Run the diagnostic and see if the hard drive is healthy.
Obviously, since you can't use IE on the sick machine, you'd need to
download any programs on another machine.
