Is there a way to play some of my older games i.e. ripper or myst on windows xp
It seems to hang or not play at all....I once hear there was a way to play any game if you told it to play in win98, or win95 mode? Is this true, and if it is, how does one do this

Thanks for any info in this matte

Hi strlrd,

What you're refering to is "Compatibility Mode". :)

To install a program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode, hold
down SHIFT as you insert the game CD, use My Computer to browse
to the setup program, and then skip down to step 1 in the list below:

To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).

1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:
a.. Windows 95
b.. Windows 98
c.. Windows NT 4
d.. Windows 2000
5.. Under Display settings, check mark the mode that you think that is best:
a.. Run in 256 colors.
b.. Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
c.. Disable visual themes.

Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.

Of course, let's not forget to check for any patches or updates for that game.
A good place to find them is: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

If you'd like to learn more information about compatibility mode, you can click the
link in the Compatibility tab that reads "Learn more about program compatibility",
or watch this Application Compatibility Power Point Presentation:

The original Myst is a tough game to get running these days, unless you have
the "re-released" Win95 version. I have the original Win 3.1 version and it
only works with the old 16 bit Quicktime, which doesn't seem to work on any
of the newer OSs.

Have you tried installing using Compatibility Mode from the beginning? I've
also got the original 3.1 version, and just installed it fine.

- Insert the CD without launching the install.
- Go to Start/Run/Browse and locate install.exe on the CD root.
- Right-click that file, select Properties and then go to the Compatibility
tab.
- Select Windows 95 in the operating system area, then put check marks in
both Run in 256 colors and Run in 640x480 screen resolution.
- If you're running any third-party themes, you may also wish to check
"Disable visual themes" which will keep the themes from trying to run on
Myst's screens only.
- Click Apply and OK your way out with install.exe highlighted.
- On the Run line with F:\INSTALL.EXE highlighted (F: being whatever your
CD-ROM is), click OK.

When the install is completed, you'll find the Broderbund Software listing
on All Programs, and before launching the game (or The Making of Myst, if
you installed that, too), right-click those links and again select
Properties.

Again go to the Compatibility tab and enter the same selections you used for
the installation. OK your way out, and you should be good to go.
