Old Hard Drive to New Computer

I have tons of development and utility software and data files on my
hard drive (80 GB) on Win XP Pro SP2. I need to get a new computer
(probably barebones), but I would like to use my existing hard drive
.... or at least not have to re-install everything (which would take a
literal week). I currently have an IBM NetVista 800 mhz system. My XP
Pro is an upgrade version.

I use Norton Ghost for backups, but this won't work for mirgration to a
new computer.

Any knowlegable solutions would be appreciated.

If you wish to use the old drive as your boot drive at the very least you
will have to run a repair installation of win, installing the new sys
drivers. And this assumes you dont have an OEM version of win.

You will need to do a Repair Install of Windows XP as per the
instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Note that if your computer has been updated to Service Pack 2 and your
Retail Upgrade CD for Windows XP is the Original Release or Service
Pack 1 version then you should create a new installation CD with
Service Pack 2 slipstreamed into it as per the instructions at

Good luck

Of course it will, as long as you don't mean the OS, but rather data, and as
long as you aren't restoring to a smaller drive than the one imaged, it
should work fine. If it's a smaller drive, just restore in pieces.
Why do you say it won't work, and what version of Ghost do you have?
