OL2003 cached: You made changes to another copy of this item

My User (boss) while on a mailbox spring clean seems to be seeing many
of these notifications on is email messages.

"You made changes to another copy of this item.
This is not the most recent version.
Click here to see the other versions"

Sometimes he will have to delete 3 or 4 or even more of these
messages. All the messages seem to be exactly the same. I can't find
any explanation of this message.

Any ideas appreciated.

User is using 3 installations of OL2003 (Office, laptop, home), All
connected in Cached Mode to an Exchange 5.5 mailbox.
