When I open an item to read in Outlook another copy of Outlook opens. How can
I change this behavior? I am running OL2003 on xp media edition.

How are you opening the item and where do you see the second copy? Are you
using word as the editor or outlook editor?

Did you ever use the option to open an Outlook folder in a new Window?

I am just double-clicking on it within the inbox. I am using Word as my editor. Just as an experiment, after I read your reply I disabled Word as the editor and Outlook seems to be OK now only opening the item in a separate window which is the expected behavior. Anyway to still use Word (I like using Word's features although I know using Word as your editor in Outlook has always been rumoured to be problematic)?

Not sure I understand--if you mean have I ever used the "open in a new window" option, then of course I have used it. But that's not what I was doing when a second copy of Outlook opened--I just double-clicked the item in the inbox and a second copy of Outlook would open.

You should show 1 word and 1 outlook. The only time you'll show a second
outlook.exe running is if you open a second outlook window. It's not a new
copy of outlook running, just a window as you can only have one outlook open
at a time. It's nothing to worry about.

In the earlier versions of office, word as the editor left a lot to be
desired. It's much better now and is definitely worth using for Outlook 2002
and 2003. (Outlook 2007 has one choice - Word.)
