offline WinXP Home upgrade to SP2

I want to upgrade a Win XP home computer to SP2 to run a clinical psychology
software package that requires SP1a

The computer is not on the Internet, and must, because it contains secure
files, stay off the network. It is in a small office that does not have IT
support. Apparently the only current way to obtain a single SP2 upgrade now
is to connect the computer to the internet and use Windows Update. As we all
know, Windows update will scan the computer and present a list of needed
upgrades.
(microsoft is no longer offering the SP2 CD)

We could install a new license of XP Home that over our old license.
There are 2 options at the local computer store
1) Win XP Home Upgrade including SP2: $100. the box says only for upgrading
from Win98, Me or 2000
2) Win XP Home, including SP2: $200

Does anyone know if the XP Home upgrade will allow us to upgrade older WinXP
Home to WinXP Home SP2?

Using another computer, download Service Pack 2 from this Microsoft
web site:

Write it to a CD, and run the CD on the computer that needs updating.

My Thanks to Steve Winograd for his helpful advice on where to download SP2
on another computer and then transfer it to the offline computer.

We haven't tried the process yet, but will do so and will then post another
message.

Sincerely,
davejames

My thanks to Trax for listing an alternative website for the SP2 download.
Very much appreciated. We will first try the Microsoft website recommended by
Steve Winograd. If the microsoft download site doesn't work, then we'll try
the website recommended by Trax. If neither option works on our off-line
machine, then we'll go buy another full license with the service packs
already present.

Thank you again,
davejames

The web link given by Steve Winograd is for the IT Professional Version of
Windows XP SP2 - there's a warning on the website for this link that says one
should not use this for a single computer license.

Does anyone know if harm will occur if I download this version and attempt
to install it on a offline single user machine?

Thanks,
davejames

It's fine to use the link, although it gives a warning, it's really just advising
that a smaller more appropriate update is available through WU.
Download it, and install.

There is no harm! You can use it. Once you are done, consider
"slipstreaming" it, with your XP install CD. This will create a new install
CD which has SP2 already "merged"/"installed" the next time you install XP.

Dear TaurArian,
Thank you for your good response.
I did go ahead and perform the install using the SP2 service pack download,
and everything worked just fine.

I was unable to find a smaller download for a single user machine, all the
Microsoft references lead to either ordering the SP2 CD (which we also did)
or to putting the computer on-line and having Microsoft download the needed
upgrade components (which, on a dial-up line would have been very tedious)

Sincerely,
Dave James

Dear M. Leclerc,
Thank you for your good recommendation to slipstream it with the XP install
CD.
I regret that I don't know how to do this, but will try to find out more

Dear Lee Chung Pak,
Thanks for your recommendation. We did order the SP2 CD and it arrived in
about 2 weeks. We were able to perform the upgrade via the SP@ download, but
have the SP2 upgrade CD if we need to do the upgrade again.
Sincerely,
Dave
