Office 97 help requested

Below is a problem I posted on the Win98 board and no one has answered. So, I
figured I would try it here.

Using a Compact deskpro, running Win98 SE, I am having a problem with the
Excel program that is
on my Office 97. Every other program in the Office 97 works great except
Excel. It has been working great and now when I try to open it I get a
message that says “This program has performed an illegal operation and will
shut downâ€. I did put the Office 97 disk in and choose the option of
“reinstall filesâ€. That did not work – I still get the same message. All help
with this problem appreciated. Thanks.

Windows 98 is an obsolete and unsupported operating
system with lots of instabilities. Do a clean WinXP installation
and the problem will disappear.

YES!!! THROW A BIG WAD OF MONEY AT IT!!!

Apparently Pegasus wants more return on his Microsoft stock.

It probably wouldn't hurt to buy a newer version of Office and a more
powerful computer either. But there's probably a significantly less
expensive solution, since Office 97 is known to work quite acceptably
under Windows 98 (SE or not). Obviously something other than the Windows
version is at the root of your problem.

As was mentioned in the Windows 98 group, you might find a more
informative reply in one of the Office groups. Make sure you mention
what version of Excel you are using and that you were satisfied with its
features when it was operating properly.

Excel, as you have noted, is an application within the Microsoft Office
Suite.
Posting questions about Excel to an Operating System newsgroup, as you have
discovered, is a pointless and futile exercise.
Try one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.office.misc
microsoft.public.excel.setup
microsoft.public.excel.misc

Our IT support costs dropped drastically after we
retired all Win9x machines. Is it that you wish to drum
up IT support business for yourself, by urging people
to retain a marginally stable OS that is based on DOS
which in itself was written almost 30 years ago?

P.S. MVPs do not work for Microsoft, do not get
paid by Microsoft and usually do not own Microsoft
stock. I certainly don't. Their advice is for the benefit
of posters, not Microsoft. When a poster has a problem
with Internet Explorer then I suggest he should use
Firefox. I use it myself all the time.

Have you tried the office newsgroups, or excel newsgroups?

I gather the OP was given that advice on the W98 group and ignored it there
as well.

as mentioned in the win98 group ...Office 97 works fine on win98 and XP

you tried the reinstall , I suggest completely remove Office97 and reinstall
it (then get the service packs)
