odd help needed

I'm posting this for my father, who always manages to mess up his
computers.

All I know is that he's running XP on a relatively new Dell or HP
computer. He's got a weird problem that he doesn't know how to fix nor
how he got it. Let me describe it best I can:

ANY window you open will not fill out the desk top. There's like 1-2"
of dead space on the right hand side of his desk top that he can't get
anything to cover. You can't stretch a window. You can't drag it.
Minimizing/maximizing doesn't help. It just will NOT fill that portion
of the screen--like there's an invisible wall/barrier there.

Anyone know how he can correct this problem?

ANY help would be appreciated, and in layman's terms ;-)
Happy New Year to all!

This sounds like the monitor settings are somehow off. Is the space black?
If so, you can adjust this with the buttons on the front of the monitor to
make the window/desktop/etc. fill the screen.

That's what I thought, too, but his desktop background is in place. The
entire picture is there. There's no black space, just an invisible
field/barrier that won't allow anything in it.

Plus, Dad said he did NOT touch those buttons ;-)

Thanks! Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Sounds similar to an LCD monitor I had which turned out to be a faulty
mainboard in the monitor.
