Neil can't remember his password

My father-in-law can't remember his password. How can he get help from
Microsoft or whomever to reset his password? His new Acer laptop support
people say he's SOL. They said "try to do a restore to a point before you
assigned the password". Since he cannot get into his computer as
administrator, is this possible? I know there is a way to correct this
problem, that includes some method to prevent an unauthorized person from
getting into an inappropriate computer. Windows XP SP2. TIA, Paul

Did he try using a blank password?

I'm new, and have just posted my own problem. But browsing this group and
finding this
query, forgive me for being so suspicious but this is a highly dubious
request.

Why would you say it's dubious - have you never forgot a password?

First I am "puzzled" by the post from Puzzled!!

lost/forgotten laptop passwords are a fairly common post - I have had
several experiences with the problem and without success of a solution.
Evidently the need to protect laptops from "easy" theft. Neil if the
manufacturer tells you that you are "SOL" - well??

If you think it's dubious, then ignore it, don't answer it, and move on?

Safe mode worked. Some security! It offered an "administrator" option,
that let Neil change his password. So if one steals a laptop, he can easily
do this. BTW, the Best Buy Geek Squad said they would remove the password
for $29. Thanks, everybody, Paul

How could Acer support possibly not have known this?
