Hi folks,

I have an Nvidia Geforce 2 ti200 with 128mb, and
have the opportunity to get an ATI Radeon 9100
Pro also with 128mb. Both cards have the same
outputs.

Which is the more powerful card, and what would
you advise that I do?

Thank you.

my last card was a leadtek geforce2ti 225/400 which overclocked to 250/480
comfortably and i now have a
sapphire 9100 128mb 250/200 clocked to 250/230.
(i sold the leadtek to my younger brother)
the 9100 supports dx8 shaders and is a bit faster in d3d games but opengl
stuff doesnt seem any better at all.
unreal 2 runs better for me now but knights of the old republic runs as well
on his machine and he has a slower CPU (XP1700 vs my XP2400)
i'm not impressed by ATI drivers having farted around to find the best
drivers for the selection of games i have much more than i ever had to do
with the 2 geforces i owned. my advice would be to save a little more and go
for geforce4 ti 4200 but if you do go for the 9100 use the 3.7 catalyst
drivers.
the image quality of the radeon is better - particularly for viewing dvds.
btw i'm just up the road from you in cheltenham - is the ac short for
agricultural college ?

Hi Sleepy,

Thanks very much for the advice. So, generally, they're pretty
evenly matched? I'm going to stick with my GeForce for now.

The .ac.uk domain simply indicates an ACademic institution.
I don't work at the Agricultural College, although it is 100m down
the road from where I do work.

Thanks again,

Andrew

Get a 9600 Pro from http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=8365 £ 102
inc VAT + delivery or www.crucial.com for £ 111.61 inc VAT & delivery - £
140 inc VAT & Delivery buys you a FX5900XT from www.dabs.com

Trouble with the UK is not a lot of great deals on eBay when it comes to
newer dx9 graphics cards if you can`t spend at least £ 110 then you may be
forced to bid on a Geforce 4 Ti4xxx series for up to £ 60 + Delivery fast
cards just not so good for dx9 and other modern effects.

My experience; the 8500 (9100) was twice as fast...
I could give you some 3DMark2001SE comparisons to back this up :) But; a
9500 pro would be a much more serious boost, of course :)

There was a GeForce2 Ti, but I don't think it had a number attached to
it, and I really doubt it ever had more than 64MB of RAM. Do you mean
GF3 Ti200?

Radeon 9100 is an 8xAGP version of Radeon 9000, which is a cut-down
version of the Radeon 8500, which performed about on par with a GF3
Ti500, IIRC. Wait a minute, that's not right. The _9200_ is the 8xAGP
version of the 9000, and the 9100 is just a rebadged 8500LE. All that
and the 9500 is faster than the 9600 too. ATI and their impossible
numbering schemes. :)

In your situation, I think I'd stick with a GF3 Ti200--the 9100 would
probably be a little faster, but not worth the cost to upgrade, unless
by "opportunity to get" you mean somebody is going to give you one.

The Radeon 9100 is a Radeon 8500 with an updated BIOS, and
runs 25Mhz slower (250/250) than the original 8500. The Radeon 9200 is
an AGP 8X Radeon 9000.

Must be a typo, there's no GF2's with 128MB.

I went from the GF3 Ti200 to a Sapphire 9600 Pro. I'm happy - wouldnt
advise you upgrade to anything less - I dont think you would see sufficient
benefit for your money. Shawk

No such card... get Aida32 from www.aida32.hu and confirm WHAT video
card you have... helpful for other stuff too.

You most likely have a rare GF3-Ti200 with 128mb RAM (no such thing as
a 128mb GF2) - it's faster than the Radeaon 9200 and down.

Yes, I do mean a GF3 Ti200, apologies. Yes, I do mean 'opportunity to
get' to mean to obtain it without a payment exchange.

Thanks for your advice. I've stuck with my GF3 Ti200.

Yes, you're right, there is no such card. I have the GF3 Ti200. I wasn't
aware that the 128mb versions were rare.

The card is an Abit Siluro GF3 Ti200 with VGA, DVI and TVO. It's also
nicely styled, with heatsinked RAM and a nice fan assembly.

The opportunity to acquire the Radeon has now passed, and I stuck with
the GeForce.

Thanks everyone,

Andrew

What do you mean stuck? The 9200 is slower than your GF3.

If you want to upgrade, get at least a Ti4200, after that - an ATI
9600Pro or FX5900.

I mean I kept my GeForce, and did not swap it for the Radeon.

Sorry for all the confusion I've caused in this thread :)

1 - I knew what you meant. I took the meaning of your post in that
you FELT bad on not being abile to DOWNGRADE/side grade to another
video card that you were presented with.

2 - No confusions with your thread, no need to apologize. You didn't
ask any thing stupid. You learned about upgrading and will have
better ideas for your next purchase.
