nslookup works, but no connectivity with names

I have a computer that will get an IP, gateway and DNS entry via DHCP.
If I ping with a name, like yahoo.com, I get an error message when I try
to ping with a name:

Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name
and try again.

However nslookup gives a correct ip and if I put the ip in the browser
it will bring up the page. So, it seems as though DNS is working and
resolving, from the nslookup, but the stack doesn't use the information.

This is the case for both the wired interface and the wireless USB that
I had working previously. Any suggestions?

I would check any virus or spyware first. Otherwise, this search result may help,

Are you using NSLookup against the same DNS server(s) that your
network connection is using?
Can you talk to the DNS servers over both UDP and TCP?

I can think of several possibilites here:

1. The browser has been set to use a proxy server. In this case, there may
be no default gateway set in the IP settings, and communication from other
programs may not work.

2. The TCP/IP stack has been damaged in some way. This has been known to
happen with Google Desktop, and Panda Antivirus, to name a couple of programs
that tamper with it in a cavalier fashion. A freeware tool called LSPFix may
be able to tell you if this is the case.

3. You have a defective or misconfigured firewall. Norton would be the prime
suspect if it's present.
