NSLOOKUP problem

Guest

Hi, I cannot access to any website using a win2000 Pro (SP4) box. I think
it's a dns-related problem, at the client side (the DNS server works fine
with all other clients)

I already tried some troubleshooting:

Pinging 127.0.0.1 works
Pinging 'localhost' works
Pinging the IP number of the gateway works
Pinging the IP number of a remote machine works
Using the IP address in I.E. instead of the name to open a website DOES NOT
work
Pinging the name of ANY machine (including the DNS server) DOES NOT work
At the command prompt, NSlookUp <enter> produces the following output:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C:\>nslookup
***Can't find server name for address 193.204.35.27: No response from server
***Can't find server name for address 131.175.1.4: No response from server
*** Default servers are not available
Default server: UnKnown
Address: 193.204.35.27

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstalling and reinstalling tcp/ip didn't help.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter didn't help.
Using the Win2k installation CD repair option didn't help.

The same identical behaviour happens if I boot with "Safe Mode with
networking" option.

I suspect some misconfiguration of some file related to DNS-client
service... is that possible? Is there any other trial I should do to
troubleshoot? Can anyone help me?

THANK YOU!

ANDREA.

Are the two addresses shown in the nslookup output the correct DNS addresses
for your network?

Yes, they are; They are correctly configured in the Tcp/Ip Properties; any
computer of my network works fine with the same settings. Also, if I use just
one of the 2 DNS Server addresses (both servers are up and running) I get the
same error.

any idea? ... thx very much

Yes, I can ping ANY machine on the Internet by IP address, including my DNS
servers.
I found some spyware/malware on the system and removed them, cleaned the
registry with some tools, but still have the problem... :-(

thank you again

I solved the problem. It was caused by a missing/corrupted osmim.dll file. I
found the solution using the LSPFIX.EXE utility - a simple and powerfool tool.

Ah ... that is probably your problem - a lingering spyware/adware
infestation. Take a look here:
