not recognising plug and play devices

I have just bought a logitech usb microphone.

I have windows xp home edition
i have service pack 2.

When i plug it in it searches for driver through new hardware wizard.
no driver found.
device is listed in device manager under "other devices" with a yellow
question mark, and a description - "AK5370" which is the device's name.

In properties it says -
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28).
it lists driver as - "unknown" and "Not available"

No driver avilable on logitech site as it is a plug and play device.

I have encountered this before with a usb data stick.
I have to use an old dell one as new ones are not recognised.

I have other plug and play devices which work.

I looked in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion - the item
'DevicePath' is not listed

First, make sure you have the right location within the registry. When
you have CurrentVersion highlighted in the left pane, it should be in
the right pane, not threaded below. Also make sure you're in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. If it is missing, with CurrentVersion selected,
click Edit, New, String Value, name it DevicePath, double-click to open
the Modify option, enter:

%SystemRoot%\inf

Mine reads:

%SystemRoot%\inf;%SystemDrive%\Drivers\Lan;%SystemDrive%\Drivers\Audio;%SystemDrive%\Drivers\Modem;%SystemDrive%\Drivers\Video;%SystemDrive%\Drivers\cpu;%SystemDrive%\windows\i386\DRV\SND;%SystemDrive%\windows\i386\DRV\VID;%SystemDrive%\windows\i386\DRV\MOD;%SystemDrive%\windows\i386\DRV\NET;%SystemDrive%\windows\i386\DRV\SCS;%SystemDrive%\windows\i386\DRV\OTH

ok got there - now - 1) at the begining of that string there seems to be a %
missing
ie; it says "Systemroot%/inf"
Does that matter.
2) I am now going to - "Then delete the file C:\WINDOWS\inf\infcache.1 - XP
will recreate it. "
Is that right
sorry if I need nursemaiding but this stuff makes me nervous!

/ks.sys
/portcls.sys
/stream.sys
/USBAUDIO.sys
/ksproxy.ax
/ksuser.dll
