-> NOT FOR RETAIL OR OEM DISTRIBUTION <- ???

J

- \(James\)

Hello,

After extensive research reading groups and web based info, I still have not
been able to find a concise answer to the following concern.

I bought FrontPage 2002 (for a $100.00) from what appeared to be a
respectable website for an outdated copy of Front Page. I bought the older
version of FrontPage because Yahoo.com web hosting services does not fully
support versions newer than that I have FrontPage 2003 and it will not work
properly with Yahoo.com web hosting services.

However, all I got was a disk in an unsealed sleeve (no CD Case) with an
official looking product key taped to the sleeve.

The gold disc reads:

FULFILLMENT DISTRIBUTION (C) 2001

UNLICENSED SOFTWARE
ILLEGAL WITHOUT SEPARATE LICENSE FROM MICROSOFT

VERSION 2002
0301 PART NO. X06-22271

The part number is not found anywhere on the web when I last checked.

I have NOT installed it yet and I'm not sure I should at all. And what is
OEM?

Any solid help (even Microsoft links) would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance!

James

FP2002 & 2003 both use the same extensions, so unless Yoohoo is using really old extensions dunno. When I was with them last april they had the most current extension on my server.

OEM...Original Equipment Manufacturerrrr. You've got a copy that is generally installed with new computers...like when you buy one already assembled with OS installed. Should work unless its a rotten bootleg.

Try to install it.

I still think Yoohoo is pullin' your chain though.

Yahoo states they don't support 2003, meaning they will not answer any
questions or help with any problems if you're using 2003. Kinda silly...one
would think a company of that magnitude would be more open brained.

Yah but it doesn't mean 03 wont work if they were running the latest 02 extensions...they just don't have the brain-space to "support" it. Actually, they didn't do much supporting of anything when I was on their system thats why I left.

Then who else has features like Yahoo for webmasters that gives you lots of
DATA on your visitors and fully supports FP 2003 ?

By the way, FP is best for photo based websites over Dreamweaver, (such as
photography) thus I use both programs based on the needs of a given website.

Here is what Yahoo.com states:

Which FrontPage components does Yahoo! support?
Yahoo! supports server extensions for FrontPage 2002 only (these extensions
are compatible with FrontPage 2000). You may use FrontPage 2003 with your
Web Hosting account; however, you will be able to access only those features
compatible with FrontPage 2002.

The following FrontPage 2002 components will work with your web site:

substitution
hit counter
marquee
hover button
include page
scheduled picture
table of content
time stamp
theme

Please note that Yahoo! does not support the search form extension.

Nothing is easy...you need to do some research.....Start with a Google
search.....You'll get thousands of hits. Compare prices, features, storage,
bandwith, email, ease of operation, support, etc. then pick one. (Some
hosts have a partial list of users you can check with).
I won't list any here because nearly everyone has something different that
suits his/her particular needs.

not necessarily...just means the are big and have a fiduciary responsiblity to shareholders...not necessarily to you the client...bigger aint always better.

That was my thought as well, as I have been with other hosting providers and
I have yet to find one that has given me the same tools that Yahoo has given
me. It's for that very reason my website has gone number one in all search
engines when searching for the information I provide. So, I'm not about to
run away. So what I am currently experimenting with is using both FP and DW
at the same time within a given domain. So far, test show this is very nice
idea.

Actually, you just said the exact *opposite* of what Rob said. Which leads me to
believe you work for Yahoo, as that's the kind of comprehension level they
typically show. LOL.

By the way, FP is best for photo based websites over Dreamweaver, (such as
photography) thus I use both programs based on the needs of a given
website.

This would only be the case if you wanted to use something canned....

You can build an awesome photo gallery in either program if you know the
gnits and gnats, doncha know?

You've made a bad call. I'm a webmaster
who owns and operates:
www.VirginiasBestKeptSecret.com
www.RoneyPhotography.com
www.RoneyEnterprises.com
www.MyPetPhotographer.com
www.MyActionPhotographer.com
www.SmithMountainLakeVisitorCenter.com
www.SmithMountainLakeRealEstateMall.com
www.BedfordVisitorCenter.com
www.FranklinCountyVisitorCenter.com
(and many more)

.... thus I do not work for Yahoo, nor do I have the time to work for them,
rather I pay them to host my websites.

Each week, I write ads for my clients as well as for myself, possibly my
wording sounded like an ad?

Sorry if I caused any confusion.

This would only be the case if you wanted to use something canned....

You can build an awesome photo gallery in either program if you know the
gnits and gnats, doncha know?

Yes, you are very right. However, I am not a professional, I have no formal
training, I'm self taught, (4 years worth) don't know Dreamweaver very well
as FP 2002-2003 are geared for photo galleries as the DREAMWEAVER FOR
DUMMIES book outlines that FP is better suited for photo based websites as
it has special automation geared for extensive photo galleries. I only know
FP 2000, but bought 2003 several months ago, only to learn it did not fully
work with Yahoo hosting, so I bought FP 2002 for now, as well as
Dreamweaver, of which I am still learning.

Besides, I spent the last 46 hours on the road non stop from western Texas,
only to come back with a bad head cold, so I'm entitled to a little miss
understanding.

James...I'm not being critical here...but you have some serious spelling issues on the two Roney sites.

| You've made a bad call. I'm a webmaster
| who owns and operates:

| www.BedfordVisitorCenter.com
| (and many more)

| ... thus I do not work for Yahoo, nor do I have the time to work for them,
| rather I pay them to host my websites.
|
| Each week, I write ads for my clients as well as for myself, possibly my
| wording sounded like an ad?
|
| Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Hmm.
Almost all of them closed for remodeling or opening soon.
Owning domains is one thing.
Owning websites is entirely different.
