Norton Systemworks compatability?

M

Mark

Hi

I have the 2002 version of Norton Systemworks, but I'm reluctant to
install it on my XP Home system as I have read many stories about
problems encountered with Norton Antivirus. Symantecs website states
that 2002 is compatible, that's not in question. I just wonder whether
it is stable? At the moment I'm running Trend Micros PC-cillin 2002,
which doesn't impress me much as It has let through a trojan and a
virus recently.

What's your opinion on Norton? Is it safe to install, or will I
encounter problems?

Cheers Mark

Well, your copy of Norton is over two years old now. I would
suggest upgrading to a more thorough and comprehensive solution:

Suggestion:

Norton Internet Security 2004
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/nis_pe/

-- Includes Norton AntiVirus 2004
-- Includes Norton Personal Firewall
-- Includes prevention of annoying web pop-ups
-- Includes Parental Controls
-- All in one, easy-to-install package

I would agree as far as upgrading but remember that any AV package is only
reliable if you update your definitions on a regular basis.

If you have dialup it should be set to check on dialup with a 1-2 minute
delay and set to once a day.

If you have a "always on" connection it should beset to startup.

We recently went thru a few weeks where there were updates 3-4 times a week!
Don't think you need to do something to get a virus just going online can
cause you to get a virus.
Email from friends is only as safe as your friends AV software!

I even had a script in a Newsgroup message that caused PCs to lock up
requiring a reboot and loss of data!

My AV software blocked it but many were not so lucky!

You may be eligible for the Symantec $30 upgrade rebate on 2004 System Works
if you have the 2002 CD & front book cover from 2002. You may want to opt
for the "Cadillac" vs the "Compact"...

I agree that updateing would be better, but finances don't allow that
luxury at this time. Hense my original question.

Hi

With the greatest respect to the respondents, let me word my question
another way. I agree that updateing would be better, but that is not
possible at this time.

Has anyone used Norton Systemworks 2002 with XP? If so, how did you
find it? Did you have any problems?

Cheers

Here is the answer from Amazon.com

Amazon.com Review
Symantec's Norton SystemWorks helps keep your work flow at full speed with
an abundance of their latest PC maintenance tools: Norton AntiVirus, Norton
CleanSweep, Norton Utilities, and Roxio GoBack 3 Personal Edition. Plus, the
professional edition adds Norton Ghost to back up and restore a computer or
upgrade a hard drive, and WinFax Basic, for turning a PC into a fax machine.
Installation, while simple, is time-consuming. Be prepared to spend some
time setting things up, anywhere from 30 minutes to more than an hour
depending on the number of programs you install and how much tweaking you
do. The 2002 edition does support Windows XP, which is one of the few
reasons current SystemWorks users may want to upgrade. However, take note
that the software no longer supports Windows 95.

I have found the Swiss army knife programs to be hogs and cause many
problems

All you need is a firewall and Antivirus software to be loaded at startup!

I have had enormus difficulty in trying to install NSW 2004 on Windows XP; when I first installed it I finally called Symantec and my particular problem was unsual--so they said. I have had to do a repair installation of XP and for some reason that I can't remember I uninstalled NSW 2004 and now I myself in a quagmire of installation hades once more. I have tried phoning Symantec, but so far haven't gotten through, UGH. Any ideas

Thanks.

Ok, you say "I uninstalled NSW 2004 and now I myself in a quagmire of
installation hades once more"...what exactly is your exact situation? More
information would be helpful.

It has been impossible to install the antivirus component of NSW 2004; The latest message is that of "The installation encountered an error and was unable to complete the modifications," and "NSW 2004 Installation has failed. Do you want to try to install again?

I have completely uninstalled as much as I know to do, including checking through the registry (as instructed from the Symantec website) and the AV just will not install

And I am trying to phone Symantec Support but so far haven't managed to get past the recorded message and the two minute wait

This is a long shot, but have you tried to do all this in safe mode, with
system restore turned off? Make sure you have admin rights, and after
turning off system restore while in safe mode, look for remnants of old 2004
AV, and delete-uninstall. Then, possibly, you may have to restart in regular
mode, turn system restore back on after booting into windows, and attempt to
reinstall from there. I have called Symantec on one occasion, and was on
hold for 40 minutes, and paid the $29.95 support...so, I can sympathize with
you. Hope this does it for you, but I am skeptical. Please let me/us know.

Thank you, Willie, but this hasn't worked eithe
But I would like to check into the administrator, owner control stuff; although I am the only user of this pc and am supposed to be the administrator, isn't it possible that some administrator category is corrupted--somehow
