No sound

Hello,
I have absolutely no sound at all on my computer. My CD's won't play and
none of the system sounds are heard, either. I usually keep my computer on
mute, occasionally turning on the sound for music and whatnot. But just now
I can't get any sound on my laptop even with the volume turned all the way
up. I have tried all of the troubleshooting methods with no luck. I have
not downloaded nor updated anything. I also have no speakers, if that
clarifies anything. I have a Dell Latitude D510. When I play a CD it works
fine and would seem like the sound would be coming out, but it is not. Any
help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated, seeing as how I just got this
notebook.

Thank You!!!!

Please clarify a couple of things:
- At the start you say "My CDs won't play" and at the end
you say "When I play a CD it works fine". The two statements
appear contradictory.
- What happens when you plug your headphones into the
speaker socket on the laptop?

I'm sorry about that. I meant that it works in the sense that it appears to
be playing, like in media player it starts up like usual and starts into the
song, all with no sound. it goes through for the whole length of the song
and into the next with no sound, like if I had it on mute (which i don't.)
When I plug the headphones into the speaker socket I still can't hear
anything and nothing happens, but when I removed it I heard like a scratchy
noise if that makes any sense.....or like when you just plug/unplug speakers
that have power flowing through it, a jumpy noise. If that means anything.
I know that description is horrible but I can't think of anything else to
explain it.

Your reply clarified a few things. The sound you hear when plugging
your headphones in and out is just static electricity. It is not generated
by the sound card in your laptop.

I recommend that you start with the Control Panel / System /
Device Manager and check our your sound device(s). I would
also uninstall, then re-install the sound card driver. It's in the
same area. You may need the driver CD that came with your
laptop.
