no sound - even after reinstalling Windows XP

since i installed a tv card (which didn't have motion capture so no good and
was uninstalled and removed from PCI)!) i cant get sound out of speakersx2 or
headphones. when playing music files in media player/real player or cakewalk
(home reocrding studio) there are sound output signs (the graphic equalizer
bars move) and i can record sound.

i have reinstalled windows 3 times, with full formats of the C drive,
installed the audio drivers for the on-board sound (motherboard is asus A7N8X
deluxe), downloaded the nVidea drivers from Windows update (all as
usual)..and nothing. i even checked the bios and on board sound was on auto
(as opposed to disabled).

cant think of any hardware problems that i may have caused whilst installing
the tv card . . . it's all on board sound.

any ideas gratefully received....

Something is "Muted"

start/run, type: sndvol32.exe , Options menu, Properties, dot 'playback' ,
and be sure all items in the scrolling list of devices is checked. OK

See the mute checkboxes below the sliders for various type sounds, and be
sure sliders a re at least part way up.

Now, Options, Properties, dot 'recording', check all devices, and OK

See the slider for the Mic, and the 'select' checkbox. (or whatever device
you want as 'input' for things like the sndrec32 app)

OK out, and test

thanx Mark....

unfortunately i have tried all this (i did try again, hopefuly and
expectantly, following your instructions and was disappointed to see a
dialogue box pop up which i have already used)...but i think you're right it
is likely that there is a mute somewhere..when i play media player the
graphix bar moves with the music. i have basically been through sound trouble
shooter a number of times and got nowhere.

am on the verge of caling out a pc man to help (money.....gulp!!) but need
to get back to recording my own music and listening to radio/mp3s etc.....so
any more ideas please shout,

Keef

The next most likely thing would be a physical problem. A bad speaker wire,
or plug, or maybe a physical control on the speaker turned down.

i have been testing all changes i make with 2 sets of speakers and a set of
headphones - all of which work on a personal cd player.

I have checked all the mute buttons are not checked, and also investigated
all the motherboard sound control center options ....output is registering on
the mobo sound panel for 2 speaker set up..

if i was setting up a tv card (now removed and uninstalled) could i have
damaged the mobo with static or whatever when i was inside the pc?? as i said
before the sound is on board, so there should not be a card or anything to
knock out of place.
up til now i have followed the usual procedure for instaling XP....load mobo
audio drivers from disk, then windows update and install the updated audio
drivers (i have done this a couple of times over the last few months when i
have cocked up the pc..and everything then returns to normal....but not now)

???????????

I would try wiggling the jack at speaker out. It sure sounds like damaged
hardware to me.
