no sound after restore, reinstall of WIN XP

i experienced a crash of XP - windows would try to load but get hung up on
the windows page. now, after a restore and 2 reinstalls of xp, i have no
sound. the system indicates everything is there on the device manager, but
even after reloading drivers will not acknowledge sound capability. i also
cannot delete the sound devices to reload them. i have tried all of the
suggested troubleshooting measures, as well as repairing any registry
problems.

any ideas?

If you go into Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

and find the service: Windows Audio

Make sure it is started. If this service is stopped you will not get sound.
