No Offence Meant

Actually it's kind of annoying to hear that you are annoyed!

Actually, it's annoying that you are annoyed that he is annoyed. :)

Awwww never mind. I'm just kidding anyway. Why bother when you can never win
these skirmishes?

I nearly used a 5 day temporary filter for Tramp's posts, but they stopped
before I lost my patience. Glad I didn't use the filter, because I found a
couple of nice little utils.

I've been reading this group for ages and find it very useful but I think
now that some people are making 20 posts at a time with stuff that is of
limited use to most people I don't come here so often.

I am asking for all those that find this annoying to reply to this post in
the hope that these posters understand how we feel and stop doing
it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you, and wish people would stop.
I also notice a "flood" of replies, many with irrelevant and
pseudo-humorous content.

Is it just me or is the signal to noise ratio on this issue WAY off the
scale??

The number of threads whining about this must surely outnumber the number
of threads generated by the OPs - and they have little or no impact (other
than to waste everyones time and bandwidth)

personally, I have no problem with these 'floods' (hey, you never know when
they might turn up something useful), but I can understand that some may.

If you do, use your filters or killfiles, but keep it to yourself (we don't
need to know, and it's highly unlikely that we even care)

At the end of the day, these guys (or gals) ARE contributing - if you
already knew about the stuff they post, or don't have a use for it, it may
just be what someone else has been looking for (it doesn't hurt to think
about the other members here occasionally...)

Flooding in this NG has been going on for some time, and back in
late 2003 some folks made a final update to a alt.comp.freeware
FAQ, containing points 20 & 22

Not plural folks, just one. And he made sure to have the answers on
the website contain only points which attempt to justifying flooding,
ignoring the POVs of those who disagree with him.

IMO, he should at least add the important point made by Sha and Onno in
this thread, that our frequent flooders don't check the programs to
make sure that they are not posting adware/shareware/spyware/&c., and
that such stuff has shown up in their floods.

What about the "cum" part?

Stand down, Chrissy -- it was cows.

Unless that's what you wanted, in which case there's probably a group
where that's on topic.

sha scammed us.

He/she posted:

"And being of free mind, I have the choice to offer my own opinions on this
and others with minds less free can pour scorn till their cows cum "

Then added "home" on next post.

We were scammed, lied to, taken advantage of.........

Nevermind.

No, not even close, off by an order of magnitude or two.

But the number of complaining /posts/ may rival the number of flooder
posts, if you include posts such as yours complaining about the
complaining.

I for one agree with you in regards to finding the flooding annoying and I
posted something to this effect last week. The majority of responses were
what I've come to expect of this group lately; little reasoned discussion
but mostly (though by no means by all) just a load of insults...

Another aspect to, particularly Tramps, the recent flooding; many of these
posts don't have a website link but just the direct download. At least one
of these (and I'm not familiar with the majority of the programs Tramp
listed) is supported by adware. How many others include some sort of ad/spy
or otherwise malicious code I don't know. I doubt Tramp knows either,
there's no indication that s/he has tried any of the programs listed...

Anyway, the flooding will continue and in the end I added Tramp to my
blocked senders list...ptoo too weet

Maybe I'm a minority here, but I like all the posting - I browse
through, check out what interests me, and download the items that look
good. It broadens my horizons a bit, makes me aware of possibilities,
and it means there are lots of hits when I search for something. It
makes me feel like a kid in a candy store browsing through.

That said, I agree that more than just download sites should be posted,
and that there should be screening for warez, shareware etc before posting.

So it's not an 'official' FAQ then?

I agree. Still, I do think a killfile works wonders. Doesn't stop the
flooding I know, but leaving it up to a persons conscience doesn't seem
to be effective. At least a killfile gives an individual, some respite.

Now, we've all read a masterful and profound observation. Appropriate that
at least one very simple word was incorrectly spelled.

Add one more to that sum.

I couldn't have said it better myself
