I for one agree with you in regards to finding the flooding annoying and I
posted something to this effect last week. The majority of responses were
what I've come to expect of this group lately; little reasoned discussion
but mostly (though by no means by all) just a load of insults...

Another aspect to, particularly Tramps, the recent flooding; many of these
posts don't have a website link but just the direct download. At least one
of these (and I'm not familiar with the majority of the programs Tramp
listed) is supported by adware. How many others include some sort of ad/spy
or otherwise malicious code I don't know. I doubt Tramp knows either,
there's no indication that s/he has tried any of the programs listed...

Anyway, the flooding will continue and in the end I added Tramp to my
blocked senders list...ptoo too weet

If you don't get many replies, I expect it is because we have all setup
message filters to ignore postings from Tramp.

I am quite sure that s/he does not. I remember that there once was even
cracked shareware among the promoted software and s/he said it was just
copied from a PC magazine and that no additional research was done when I
pointed that out.

What's the big deal???

No one says you have to even look at them.

IN OE, just highlite all you find offensive and hit delete. (Just as the
purists will do for this being top posted where you can find it.) [bg]

I agree....Just delete or "shXtfile" posts you don't like. I speak as
"lurker", not as an expert on usenet etiquette

Actually it's kind of annoying to hear that you are annoyed! The topic
has already been discussed ad-nausium in other threads, so reopening the
same discussion in yet another thread is paramount to the proverbial
adage: rubbing salt in an open wound.

Totally agree, steve. I first came here 5 years ago, but now its being
swamped with inappropriate links and its impossible to sort the wheat
from the chaff.
I believe there should be two basic rules :
1. Only post links to freeware that you've tried and can recommend.
2. Always give the url of the author, *not* the d/l link - and never
via the url of a PC Mag or "Majorgeeks" type outfit.

Just IMHO, of course.

I believe there should be two basic rules :
1. Only post links to freeware that you've tried and can
recommend.

There can be an occasion where someone comes across freeware that
appears interesting, and posts a link to it asking if anyone else has
used this software and asks if they personally recommend it *before*
they try it out.
2. Always give the url of the author, *not* the d/l
link - and never via the url of a PC Mag or "Majorgeeks" type
outfit.

Sometimes (rare case) the freeware author does not have a URL and you
have to DL it from another source. For example, program: XCLONE.EXE
v1.3 author: "David Weber". An excellent freeware utility I highly
recommend, no author's web page (that I can locate). Also, there are
archives of very old software where the author has long since gone. The
software is obsolete but may still be of use to somebody. I think links
to these archives are acceptable.
Just IMHO, of course.

I do not find the posting of such persons as Tramp and others to be
annoying, but the just the opposite. I am appreciative of their effort.
Being of free mind, I have the choice to use this group or not, to look at a
post or not and to download a program or not. I am sure that others have
these options as well. I have assembled several CD's of non installable
software to use on my laptop, which has limited storage space, or on my
computer at work, which has user restrictions which non-installable software
gets around. I think that this group thrives when there are more people
contributing.

Bill

Flooding in this NG has been going on for some time, and back in late
2003 some folks made a final update to a alt.comp.freeware FAQ,
containing points 20 & 22

alt.comp.freeware FAQ.

(20) SOME POSTERS MAKE LARGE NUMBERS OF INDIVIDUAL POSTS. WHY DON'T
THEY JUST MAKE A SINGLE POST WITH ALL THE LINKS LISTED TOGETHER?

Because with a long list many people will re-quote it in total when
only commenting on one of the items. This makes reading/commenting on
such posts more time consuming/difficult for many people. With
individual posts it is much easier to find/follow threads about a
particular recommendation, and comment on it, if desired. If one
doesn't want to see these posts then killfile the people who make them.
See 22.

Individual posts also make it easier for people to killfile
topics/programs that don't interest them. Also, some people keep
newsgroup posts so if there are multiples they can save what they want
and delete the rest. One big post would necessitate saving a lot of
info one didn't want.

(22) SOME POSTERS SUGGEST I "KILLFILE" POSTERS I DON'T LIKE EG. (20)
AND/OR SUBJECTS I AM NOT INTERESTED IN. WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT?

"Killfiling" is a term used to describe the process of filtering posts.
For example, a newsreader can killfile a particular poster and/or
subject so that anything matching that criteria is "marked read" or
"deleted". Either way one then does not need to read anything by those
posters or those threads. Check your newsreader help file for items
such as filtering/killfiles/bozo bin etc.
Anyway, the flooding will continue and in the end I added Tramp to
my blocked senders list...ptoo too weet

Likewise and peaceful it is without his posts, too.

If you don't want to see certain posts then use a killfile.

And being of free mind, I have the choice to offer my own opinions on this -
and others with minds less free can pour scorn till their cows cum
