No NIC after re-install

Did a format and re-install of XP Pro yesterday - it was time after two
years - everything went very well with the exception of no network
connection.

I installed the Realtek Network 8139 Fast Family Ethernet adapter
manually but it shows in Device Manager as failed to start (code 10).

Tried most things I can think of - uninstalled it but Plug and Play does
not find it on reboot. Used mobo utilities disc to install network
drivers; no joy.

The NIC connection on mobo shows power - green light - but nothing there.

Ideas?

I am assuming that this is an embedded NIC, built onto the motherboard. Is
it definitely enabled in the BIOS?

If you pop in another NIC, into a slot, is it detected?

Yes; embedded NIC and in BIOS, onboard LAN enabled.

I don't have a NIC slot to pop another device into; do you mean another
NIC RJ-45 cable plug?

No, I mean power down the machine, open it, and insert a PCI card NIC
(network interface card). Restart the machine. Is it detected?

Network cards are quite inexpensive; you don't need to pay more than about
CND$20.

The suspicious thing is that if you remove or uninstall the embedded device
it is not re-detected. In Device Manager, Actions, choose Scan for New
Hardware. If the embedded NIC is not discovered, it may have failed, and
you'll need to replace it. A card is the quickest bet.

The NIC should be detected whether there is anything plugged into it or not,
as long as it is enabled. Remove any drivers associated with it and scan
for new hardware.

Even though the embedded chipset may be a realtek you need to run the
motherboard CD or go to the motherboard manufacturers site. Is this what you
have tried or are you trying to install realteks drivers.

....'no joy' meaning...it doesn't show up in DM?

I doubt if you'd get that icon if the NIC hadn't been installed...but
not sure.

Have a nice one...
