No Multimedia Option In Add Programs?

While I have audible sound, what started this whole merry go round for me was I
couldn't (and can't) get my microphone to work. I started looking around and
there's no multimedia options in my Start > All Programs > Accessories menu.
The Entertainment folder appears to be empty. Clicking on Add/Remove Programs
in the control panel and then selecting Windows Components doesn't show a
multimedia option of any sort. Can't find the sound recorder executable file
sndrec32.exe anywhere either...

I'm running a legit copy of Win XP Pro SP2 with all current updates. Something
obviously got smoked in the past but I can't say when. I didn't have a need for
the recording capability until recently. And like I said, it plays sounds just
fine... I just can't record new ones or get any sort of reaction from the
microphone.

There are no speech engines installed that I can see either, if that matters.
The computer doesn't seem to have any hardware problems except for the dead
microphone. I'm using the sound capabilities

I'm running WinXP Pro and I have sndrec32.exe in C:\Windows\system32.
You may need to reinstall Windows.

Edit the sysoc.inf file (first backup the original) using Notepad. For each
component that you want to appear in the Add/Remove Programs applet, remove
the HIDE field and its associated comma. For example, to force Setup to
enumerate multimedia components, change the line that reads

MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7
to
MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,7

Then you should be able to uninstall/install the Multimedia group.

Using Control Panel, Sounds & Audio Devices, Audio (TAB) - what does
the system display in the Sound Recording, Default Device: box ?

Not for me it doesn't. In fact, while it shows accessory programs such as
Paint, I don't have that program installed on my computer these days. I'll be
damned if I know what happened to it. This happened a few months back... the
calculator, Paint, character map, etc just disappeared one night. Other than
that the problem we've been discussing, the computer seems to run fine.

I'm thinking some update nuked my accessory programs, but they don't seem to
want to reinstall. And of course, the multimedia stuff is gone, gone, gone.

This is a lot of trouble just because the microphone crapped out. I know I'm
going to end up regretting what I've stirred up.

Thanks - Did you check the "All Users" and "Default Users" folders
under Documents and Settings for the Entertainment program group ?
( Would require View options, System, Hidden and Protected to
be enabled )

Have you used nLite or other customized install/setup program ? It
would allow you to remove those components from the XP instance.

If you have an alternate account, have you logged in to verify the
options/groups are missing in that profile as well.

I have solved the problem: a complete reformat of the hard drive, followed by a
clean installation of XP Pro SP2 from the original disk. This was then followed
by the uploading and installation of some 55 updates, Norton's SystemWorks 2005
and Zone Alarm Pro. Then Windows Defender, followed by various software
applications as they occured to me. Data files were retrieved from my external
hard drive where I back up every week.

Absolutely amazing!. Things have reappeared and everything seems to work. I'm
still tweaking it to my liking but at least it all seems to work. And
irregardless of what I wrote earlier, I don't regret my actions. Sometimes you
just have to flush the toilet and start anew.
